Dear

While God Allah has permitted to marry upto four wives only if the husband can make equal justice and equal treatment to all of them, for which he is answerable before God.

Our Holy Prophet peace be on him had set an example to his followers by treating them equally and spnding his nights with them equally and use to obtain permission from among his wives if he had a necessity to be with other wife in case.

All of these obligation can be fulfilled only if the previous wife or wives know about his intension to marry another one. If he does not inform them then it is deceit and he is answerable before God.

May God guide all of us towards straight path Amen.

While it is true that the Quran does not state that a husband must have their first wife's permission, it is rather obvious that she must know. If he were to get married to another without her knowing this is deceit and that is completely wrong. She may feel unloved and depressed that her husband would do this without telling her and this would possibly lead to arguing and possibly divorce. The man must treat both equally and if the first wife feels betrayed by it then this is obviously breaking that rule. It is common sense that she should know and agree to keep from causing tension and resentment towards her husband and the new wife. On another note it is much agreed upon that the two or more wives should not be forced to share the same house because this may also cause problems with cooperation as the first wife might view this house as her domain and there might be conflict on decision making in the house, chores, etc..

Yeah, he can do whatever he wants without his wife's consent. He is still an individual in the eyes of the law.

well, ali has cited the verse, and it is very clear, why can't people understand that simple admonition? No, offense to women. When I was a new convert, i almost left islam bc it seems unjust for a man to have more than one wife, or the woman can only have only one husband. But with due studies, i understand that there is great wisdom in the words of Allah , subhanah wa ta ala. I myself is not a womanizer, for that matter, but to those males with so much high testosterone levels, wow, they just can't seem to have enough on everything, esp women. And if this belief that man can't marry more than one wife without the consent of the first, you just gave great disservice to womankind bc such man would be rampaging around without being binded with responsibilities.I have conversed with several "devoted" muslim women about this matter and they acknowledge the greatness of the commandment allowing man to have more than one wife, but not with her husband. Lol!
Can't those who opposed this concept see that this is a wisdom for the protection of all women against philanderers? And who are this males, mostly those who have more than enough to feed 5 different families.
Personally, I would prefer to marry only one wife, but how about those women who have no other to care for them, as women are more than men? And how about the males who would just want one wife, but have many girlfriends, mistresses, isn't this social injustices, get rid of the girls when they are no longer desireable? It's no different disallowing priest to marry bc the earnings of the church can go to the personal accoutns of the wife, so they just got lot of mistresses.
So, let the man marry up to 4, and have them be treated justly, but if he is unable, let him not be unpunished, severely.

salam, northern ohio's butterfly, but that is in the case of paramours, not wedded, and what you cited have no mention that a man must marry only one wife if she does not give consent. Well, legally, I know many parts of the US does not allow polygyny even to muslims, and also in a islamic country like turkey, then some country have in their laws that the 1st wife must give approval first which is not based on the quran.
Remember the wisdom that should the 1st wife give consent is required, the man is given the liberty to philander innocent victims.
salam alaykum to ali, huma tahseen, wolfmuslimah

Yes. There is no evidence from Quran or Sunnah that the consent of the first wife is required. However doing it in secret is not acceptable.

If he secretly married another wife without his first wife's knowledge of it then they would be taking Paramours. And this is forbidden in
The Holy Quran. Surah 4 (The Women) verse 25. If any of you have not The means wherewith To wed free believing women, They may wed believing Girls from among those Whom your right hands possess: And Allah hath full knowledge About your Faith. Ye are one from another: Wed them with the leave Of their owners, and give them Their dowers, according to what Is reasonable: they should be Chaste, not lustful, nor taking PARAMOURS: when they Are taken in wedlock, If they fall into shame, Their punishment is half That for free women. This (permission) is for those Among you who fear sin; But it is better for you That ye practice self-restraint. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

No.

In Islam, a husband has to get consent from his wife / wives before getting another.

No. If he marries another woman without his previous wife's permission then the marriage is nullified and the wife he is legally married to can divorce him because of that. Also he'll be sinning for not getting permission from his first wife.

Well there is a law that says a man can only have more than one wife only if he can provide equally for each...I suppose the wife would have no say if the man was a rich one.
