I think that I have TMJ. When I open my mouth or yawn, I can hear my jaw pop and make a crackling noise. Its really aggravating because I hear it every time I do this. I told my dentist and he said that when I get braces, then it may stop. I CANT WAIT ANYMORE!!!! I heard about TMJ surgery. What are the after affects of this surgery? Will they have to wire my mouth shut? How long do I have to stay in the hospital? Anyone who has had it can ya help a brotha out..lol. Thanks!!!!

It has to be really really bad to have surgery. To the point that you can't open your mouth all the way. They do have to wire your jaw shut. Your only in the hospital for a couple days and your jaw stays wired shut for 6 weeks or so. Braces might help re align your jaw and it won't snap anymore.

#1 cut caffeine
#2 be careful about being around a lot of noise
#3 don't do any surgery without several opinions
#4 don't do surgery unless you absolutely cannot take it anymore.
#5 braces could make the problem better , but it could get worse too - get several opinions - but it's likely that it will get better because most likely you have a functional problem.
#6 exercise - it will help.
#7 get sleep.
#8 massage therapy can often help
#9 physical therapy can often help
#10 surgery is a last resort.
#11 research things - there's a number of groups that may help you. like www.tmj.org etc.
