You pronounce the r slightly. I really can't explain in English how to say it. You've really made me thing. I grew up speaking French as my first language, and have no real idea how to say it.

It's kat with a slight r sound. Sometimes, (in the way the French say it) you can hear the r and sometimes you can't. Kinda try to blend the r into the t because in French vowels are not aspirated like they are in English, so change your aspiration of the t into the r sound. I know.... my answer is the most confusing.

well you can get away with "cat" but you need to make that phlegm-y "r" sound at the end. I've heard people say "catruh" and also "cat" with the r thing.

In spoken French it's spoken just like "cat".
If you are singing or reading poetry then
it's often "cat ruh".
