The first meaning of "Islam" is the verb from the root "aslama" (a verb), meaning to: "surrender; submit; obey; sincerity and in peace."
The second meaning of "Islam" is the noun form from the same root, and it describes the last and final form of the way of life as perscribed by the Creator for His Creation. This is the name used in Quran for Muslims to call themselves as followers of "Islam". This would make them "Islam-ers" in English, but of course in Arabic the prefix "mu" is added to denote the one preforming the action or verb and instead it becomes "mu"-"islam" or "Muslim."
"Islam" can be understood in a very general sense to be the true religion of God, as it is from Him and according to His commandments without adding to or taking away from the basic precepts.

Beliefs in Islam
*
Pillars of Faith (6 Beliefs of the Muslim)
1. Allah (The One Almighty God of all)
2. Angels (made from light)
3. Books (all revealed scriptures are from Allah)
4. Prophets (messengers of Allah)
5. Day of Judgment of Judgment (everyone will be resurrected)
6. Predestination (Divine Decree of Allah)
Every Muslim is required to believe in all six (6) of the above to be considered as a true Muslim.
---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Main Pillars of Islam
Shahadah
(Testimony of Faith)
The first pillar of Islam is to believe and declare the faith by saying the Shahadah (lit. 'witness'), known as the Kalimah.
Salah
(Daily Ritual Prayers)
Prayer (Salah), in the sense of worship, is the second pillar of Islam. Prayer is obligatory and must be performed five times a day. These five times are dawn (Fajr), immediately after noon (Dhuhr), mid-afternoon ('Asr), sunset (Maghrib), and early night (Isha').
Sawm
(Fasting the Month of Ramadhan)
The fourth pillar of Islam is fasting. Allah prescribes daily fasting for all able, adult Muslims during the whole of the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar calendar, beginning with the sighting of the new moon.
Zakah
(Alms Tax for Poor)
The third pillar of Islam is the alms-tax (Zakah). The word in Arabic implies "purification" and it is understood to mean that a person "purifies" his holdings of wealth from greed and stinginess.
Hajj
(Pilgrimage to Mecca)
The fifth pillar of Islam is to make a pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah, in Saudi Arabia, at least once in one's lifetime. This pillar is obligatory for every Muslim, male or female, provided that he/she is physically and financially able to do so.

Islam teaches strong value in respecting innocence and virginity, so abstinence before marriage is expected. Generally, I dont think homosexuality is accepted because it's viewed as unnatural. Some basic beliefs are to read the Quran, only eat halal, never eat or touch pork, dress and behave modestly, respect family and elders, perform hajj, make an effort to pray 5 times a day facing Mecca (its a way Muslims use to slow down when things are getting too hectic in life and take time to remember and pray to God) Fasting during Ramadan. Going to a Masjid is an amazing experience. Its beautiful inside and out. The imam's voices are like songs when they recite verses from the Quran.

Istanbul is the most secular part of a country which is officially secular. Neither will be very offensive, there's plenty of atheists in Istanbul. And it's a very beautiful city. I'm sure you won't miss the Topkapi Palace, Aya Sofya and the Blue Mosque, but also of note is the archeological museum (their classical and mesopotamian collection is impressive), and a boat tour up the Bosporus. The best way to do that is to take the public zig-zag ferry from the southern side of the golden horn. Get all the way to the last stop, and climb the mountain to have a view of the Black Sea. Have fun!

Ans: Islam is not a new religion, but the same truth that God revealed through all His prophets to every people. For a fifth of the world's population, Islam is both a religion and a complete way of life. Muslims follow a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness, and the majority has nothing to do with the extremely grave events, which have come to be associated with their faith.

2. What does Islam mean?
Ans: The Arabic word Islam simply means 'submission', and derives from a word meaning 'peace'. In a religious context it means complete submission to the will of God. 'Mohammedanism' is thus a misnomer because it suggests that Muslims worship Muhammad (peace be upon him) rather than God. 'Allah' is the Arabic name for God, which is used by Arab Muslims and Christians alike.
Source: www.alim.org
3. How do we know Islam is the truth?
Ans: 1- It is the only religion that holds Allah as One, Unique, and Perfect.
2- It is the only religion that believes in the sole worship of Allah, not Jesus, not an idol, and not an angel, only Allah.
3- The Quran does not contain contradictions.
4- The Quran contains scientific facts, which are 1300 years ahead of their time. The Quran, while revealed 1400 years ago contains scientific facts, which are only now being discovered. It is not in contradiction to science.
5- Allah has challenged the world to produce the like of the Quran. And He says they won't be able to.
6- Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the most influential man in history. In the book "The 100 most influential men in History", written by non-Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was #1. Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) was #3. It should be noted that even the Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) was a prophet sent by Allah. Would Allah allow a false prophet to be so successful? No. Even the Bible refers to this in Deuteronomy 18:19. A false prophet would die!!! Yet Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not die till he completely conveyed, and taught Allah's religion.
7- He had many prophecies, and all of his prophecies have come true, or are still coming true

Islam is a monothiestic religion, semitic in its origin
One of the three Abrahamic religions, next to Christiantiy and Judaism
The First Pillar In Islam Is Sincerity In Faith
Meaning You dont only mean what you say
But You act Upon It
The Name Muslim Means One Who Submits His Will To God
So Islam is a system of submiting to the will of God, and acting upon his laws.
Salvation Does not come from belief but comes from actions and good deeds and everyone will be Judged by God according to their deeds in this life. A bad muslim will enter hell as a bad chrisitan or bad jew will enter the realm of hell.
Islam Is Pure Monotheism
He is God, the One God,
Independent and Sought by all;
He begets not, nor is He begotten,
and there is none like unto Him.(He is Niether Man Nor Can Man Be Like God)
(The Holy Qur'an Chapter of Sincerity of Faith)
Second Pillar Is Prayer:
Righteousness does not mean for you to turn your faces towards the East and West, but righteousness means one should believe in God (Alone), the Last Day, angels, the Book and prophets; and no matter how he loves it, to give his wealth away to near relatives, orphans, the needy, the wayfarer and beggars, and towards freeing captives; and to keep up prayer and pay the welfare tax; and those who keep their word whenever they promise anything; and are patient under suffering and hardship and in time of peril (stress). Those are the ones who act loyal and perform their duty.
(The Holy Qur'an 2:177)
Prayer (salat), offered five times a day, has the '7 effect of reminding the faithful that "remembrance of God is indeed the greatest virtue," and helps them adhere to the path of righteousness, and to restrain themselves from indecency and evil.
The Third Pillar Is Fasting:
Fasting (sawm), observed through the daylight hours of the 29/30 days of the Islamic month of Ramadan, involves abstinence from eating,
drinking, smoking and marital intercourse; this reminds the believers of their dependence upon
God, as well as their kinship with, and responsibility for the millions of human beings in the
world who experience involuntary fasting because of the lack of provisions, or their unjust distribution.
The Fourth Pillar Is Charity:
Purification of wealth (Zakat): this requires the annual giving of a fixed amount of excess personal assets for the benefit of the poor, the
incapacitated, the deprived, and the welfare of the community; it serves to remind Muslims that all beneficence comes from the bounty of God, and is enjoyed only by His mercy; sharing becomes an act of purification both of the wealth itself, and of the giver whose soul is disciplined against greed by the virtue of selflessness.
Fifth and Final Pillar Is Pilgramage:
5) Pilgrimage (hajj), which all Muslims should perform at least once in a lifetime if personal circumstances permit, gathers the believers as members of the diverse human family into a single community; they perform prescribed acts of worship at the Holy House of the Ka'ba in Mecca which, according to the Qur'an, was originally built by the Prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael; and at Mount Arafat where they remember the pure and original way of life of Adam, the progenitor of all human beings, reaffirmed by the Patriarch of the entire human family, the Prophet Abraham, and finally perfected and completed by God for all humanity through the mission of the Prophet Muhammad - the way of life known as Islam which has at its heart the doctrine of the unity and uniqueness of the One God.
