The ancient Celts dressed up in animal skins and other things to scare away the evil spirits crossing over from the other side since it is believed that the veil between both worlds thins around this date.

Well basically Halloween is the commercialized version of Samhain, and yes Halloween is based on Samhain. For many pagans, it's our "dia de los muertos" as well as the new year. Older traditions include (but certainly not limited to) walking door to door in celebration- like a big block party

The bobbing for apples. Most of your decorations and silly little halloween traditions were born from things Wiccans do on Samhain to celebrate.

I'm not sure about the costumes though. Or the candy.

Samhain was before the Christian movement when they moved in they changed the name to suit them.

Samhain is the harvest night celebration when the communities got together & shared in their bounty with each other & thank the gods as well as ask a blessing for the next harvest.

you know what Halloween is now. so there is the difference.

Samhain wasn't grossly commercialized and did no longer have people dressing up as pirates,Marie Antoinette, vampires,Frankenstein,Alice in Wonderland,or the different individuals or issues no longer linked in any way with the Samhain pageant.

Halloween borrows HEAVILY from the Celts. I'm Norse pagan so I will let the Celts answer this one. But most of the traditions stem from them.
