I have had my cat since birth. She is usually an indoor cat but has been outside a few times. She has been pooping on the carpet everyday for the past 3 weeks. I have tried rubbing her nose in it, shutting her up in the bathroom (where her liter box is), spray stuff on the carpet. I don't know what to do at this point.

There is always a reason a cat changes its toileting behaviour; they don't do things from spite - that is a human emotion.

Stress can cause it - anything from moving house, rearranging furniture, to a change in the people in the house or a loved one's absence. And as a cat gets older they will get stressed more easily - just like humans. If it's one of these you need to give the cat lots of love and attention to reassure her - DO NOT rub her nose in it. She won't understand and that would only stress her further.

Other reasons can be medical which only a vet can determine. It could be something easily treated (an infection or similar) or a long term condition (which can still be treated and give your cat years of good quality life) or simply old age - she may be getting senile or she may just not be able to get to the litter tray fast enough - put another litter tray near where she has been going on the carpet.

Most Important: Go see a vet first who can determine if and what may be wrong with her. At 15 years she could do at least with a check-up. She is a senior citizen now - that is not enough reason to put her to sleep; give her lots of love and care and she could have a happy life for several years.

Take care and take care of your cat!

Has she been to the vet? There may be a medical problem causing her to act out. A lot of times if a cat doesn't feel well, even if it doesn't have anything to do with the urinary or digestive system, they will eliminate outside the litter box just to get attention and let you know that something is wrong and they aren't feeling well. If you take your kitty to the vet and they say she is perfectly fine after labwork and all that jazz, then I would consider a behavioral problem. Cats can get upset about things that you wouldn't even think about. It could be something has changed in the house, something about the litter box or a stray cat has been hanging around outside or she just may be getting a little senile (there are lots of things to consider).

One thing is for sure. She isn't doing it to make you mad so please don't rub her nose in it or punish her. She's doing it for a reason and putting feces on her face won't make her understand. Talk to your vet about her and see what advice they have for you.

She really does need to go to the vet, my mom has to put linen savers down in our 14 yr old cat's room because she misses her litter box alot. Our 20 year old cat (who passed away a couple of years ago) lost her sight, had diabetes but was not in pain, she died of old age, she stopped using the litter box for a couple of years. It may be a medical condition

Brittany S, your pathetic. A cat is a living, breathing mammal, and so are we...so i can't believe you can dispose of a life like that.

Don't rub her nose in it! She has been a good and loyal pet to you for 15 years. Do the right thing and take her to the vet. A full senior exam should let you know whether she has a condition that can be treated or if it is time for you to put her to sleep. Jeez, wait until you get old and start wetting the bed. Would you want your loved one to rub YOUR nose in it?

Take her to the vet to make sure every thing is ok.

Maybe she cant make it to the litter box any more... have you thought of moving the litter box to a more convenient spot for her..after all she is like a human in their 90's her bones probably ache..and she doesn't get around like she use to.

Be patient and supportive of her in her old age...only if a cat is suffering should it be put down! Doesn't sound like she is suffering, just having accidents...

I wish you the best of luck...

It could be a sign of something that should be looked at by your vet, then again it could be a behaviorial problem... is your cat doing this in front of you? or near you where you could possibly see??? A lot of times if something changes in the house your cat can become angry - and this is her way of telling you "i'm mad" if thats the case. Just to be sure, before you spend unneeded money on the vet, call your local humane society or shelter and ask tell them the situation and see if its possibly just that she is upset about something. Good luck!

A cat, who is 10 years or older should be considered senior aged. She is old and that might be the reason why she is having little "accidents" (loss of control) I would take her to the vet just to make sure and go easy on her :)
Good luck.

She needs to go to the vet and get checked out!! She is not like an old defective toy she is a cat! It could be a behavior or medical condition or both. It's probably something treatable.

Stop rubbing her nose in her own ****. She has no idea what you mean by that. Go to the vet and get some medicine, and hopefully she will live out her days and forget about all the nastiness that has been happening to her just because of something that is not her fault.

I'm sorry for the bad news, but it sounds like your cat is in the early stages of renal failure. She probably can't help it, and any attempts to discipline the animal will just make this all the more difficult for her.

You need to take her to the vet as soon as possible. Take care.
