I am writing a paper on religion and can't remember this word. Anyone know? *PLEASE* don't give me huge pep talks on what I should or should not believe, and please understand that this question has nothing to do with my personal beliefs. I'm just looking for a word for what I want to say in my paper.

Some okay answers, and some totally blah ones. None of them is the word I'm looking for, it's kind of like consequentialism but this word can only be applied to religion, not just generally.

A relatively interesting question because I think that many people tend to hold a position similar to this. I would think the closest you could get to a word that describes this would be consequentialism. That is a philosophy where the ends justify the means. Therefore a consequentialist would support religion if he or she believes it benefits society by teaching moral behavior regardless of it's validity in fact or lack of scientific proof. So a consequentialist might be an atheist but because of a consequentialist philosophy be supportive of religion.

That doesn't make sense. If someone didn't believe in religion then he or she wouldn't support religion as a may to manage society. That would be like saying you are a Jewish Nazi.
