I'm having a first date with someone tomorrow. We're meeting for the first time over lunch. He invited and chose the place and time. What should I do or not do when the check arrives? I want things to go smoothly. PLEASE HELP.

Ask if him if he wants to split it. If he insists on paying for both of you just tell him thank you.

Some guys will offer to pay for the girl on a date. Some won't. Likewise, I have encountered some girls that explicitly wanted me to pay for them as well as explicitly wanted to pay for themselves.

If you don't mind either way, don't make a fuss when the bill comes. Just start to get money out and see how he reacts. If he is planning on paying for you, he'll notice and say that he can pay for you. If he wasn't really planning on it and if he doesn't say anything, I wouldn't see anything wrong with it (he might have had an experience before where someone else got upset that he offered to foot the whole bill). If he asks you to cover the whole bill, that would be my red flag. :-P

What some people might not think of is that the bill is a good way to communicate the potential of a second date. If you really don't want to date this guy again, it's okay if you say that you'll pay for yourself even if he asks. If you want to date this guy again, you could either pay the whole bill yourself and say something like "you can pay the next time"... or if he pays the whole bill, you could say "okay, but I'll pay for next time". Basically, guys can pick up to you referring to "the next time" and see it as a good sign.

One last thing I just thought of is that maybe since he picked the place and time, he might want to pay the whole bill (and if you want to date him again, figure out a new place and time)

Best of luck!

usually a guy will gets the check, maybe he doesn't want to but to polite...he will ( just my opinion), you can then ask to split it.....If he still want to pay for it (you really can tell if he means it or not, right?), then let him.....good luck..

yea, try to split it, it shows that you know how mutual things need to be and you're willing to work for that, because thats really the way it has to be if its going to work.

Ask him if he wants to split it, because if he does and you don't ask or offer its annoying as "ef you see kay"
