It's a new construction home, so the builder inentionally for that reason made the fire place mantel really low about 4 and 1/2 feet tall.

It would depend on the room for how it would look. Take a picture of the room and use Photoshop to put a plasma tv above the fireplace to see how it would look. You could have the dvd player, vcr, cable box, ect.. located somewhere discreet, or build a cabinet mounted flush with the wall.

I know they are showing this placement a lot but it does require a lot of pre-planning and info. I would first check on whether plasma could go there given the heat element. I have seen more LCDs. Most people pre-wire everything behind the wall and then you can have cabinetry on the sides of the fireplace with all your other electronic equipment. Be aware that HDTV equipment is larger and so are the wires should you add that feature through your provider. You would want to have it done at the same time you are pre-wiring the rest. I find the fireplace location in the homes I've been in to be too high and a strain to watch even with electronic tilting features. Also consider that plasma TV's wash out if there is a considerable amount of sun on that wall or the room in general. LCD's tend to hold their screen. We have a two story room with a fireplace on one solid wall and have placed our entertainment center with LCD on another. It doesn't detract from the fireplace at all and in fact gives it more focus. A TV shouldn't be what makes the fireplace a focal point. Your furniture arrangement and use of the room should do that.

I don't like TV's mounted over the fireplace. The fireplace is a focal point and I think they look inappropriate there. Builders are doing this set up, but that doesn't mean they are right.

mounting a plasma television (~2000+) over the fire will in all probability destroy the flexibility grant (~500) in short order. enhancing a fire isn't a powerful theory till a professional and insured. this form of DIY frequently create living house fires. yet while your going to do it use a similar gage cord that feeding what your getting the flexibility from. do no longer use 14 while there would desire to be a 20A circuit and #12 cord

My sister has a big TV on top of her fireplace. It's up high and I hate to watch it. Makes my neck sore. I would never put my TV up so high. It's not to bad if you sit in the other room. A friend of mine hated it up high too. It will work up there but beware of the pain that may occur watching it!
