In the house. She's potty-trained, but when she gets excited or nervous she runs and poop plops onto the floor. Also, sometimes we're just sitting on the couch and as she goes to jump off the couch poop flies out and she makes a break for the dog door (trying to make it in time)

Why is she doing this? And how can we get her to stop (without spanking)? Thanks so much!

Oh, also she is a Shih Tzu and 5 years old if this helps any. She's just recently started doing this over a couple months..occasionally a few years back (but it was in the car).

Get her into more of a routine to go walking.

I have a female Malamute that did the same thing. She'd get so excited at just the prospect of going out for a walk...BAM!!... lincoln log right at the front door.

I found that when we walked her more frequently and longer, we stopped having those mishaps....

Sounds like a new thing so it isn't lack of training. I don't know unless you have changed her diet...think? Maybe her treats or anything. What about water? Have you moved or anything? This is all I can think of. Sounds like she is loosing control of her muscles an when she is excited the muscles let go. Haven't changed her from dry to canned food or since the scare changed her dry food? Outside of this I can only think of maybe trying to take her out more often and spending some time out with her until she does her thing. I know it seems like she is doing it on purpose but I don't think so. Maybe try changing to a sensitive dog food. You might try feeding her less too and adding some pepto to her diet...maybe 1 tsp. a day and see if it helps, you can get it down her with a little bite of something, maybe? It won't hurt her. She could have irritable Bowel Syndrome. Just try it and see if it makes a difference at all. Good luck. Also, the worst case you might have to cook her some hamburger or chicken with rice and keep it in the fridge and feed this to her once a day for a while to see if it clears it up. If so, you might have to cook this one day a week and store it for the week. It is a pretty good diet for sensitive tummys.

Figure out how much food your dog should eat a day (look at the recommendations on the bag of food) and feed the dog at specific times during the day. Immediately after the dog eats, put her out to do her business. Eventually, the dog will learn that it eats at a specific time of day, and then goes out and poops right after then.

The problem with feeding a dog all day (setting the food down and letting it eat whenever it feels like it) is that the dog then gets the urge to poop whenever it feels like it. And, we owners are not always in position to let the dog out in time. So, they learn to just go whenever and wherever they please, even when we think they're potty trained.

hmm.. try not getting to hyped up around her. try not to feed her table food (people food) and try simple dog foods like beneful or whole grain foods. nothing high profile wiht lots of **** in it. lol.

go to a store maybe petsmart and buy a spray bottle. when she poops in the house use the spray bottle and spray her. she will be alarmed and she will realzie not to do it adn go outside.

my dog did it too. whenever she was scared shed **** and what we did was keep an eye on her and when a storm was coming we let her outside and shed usually **** there but if she was inside whenit got tooo bad we held her and stroked her telling she was a good girl so shed be less scared.

summarized:

when ur puppy gets scared hold her and let her no its ok
dont get too excited around her

hope this helps babe :D

Have you changed your dogs food recently? Maybe something is not agreeing with her that she can not make it to the door(outside) in time. It didn't sound like diarrea in your description, but if it is, the doggie could be dehydrated? or perhaps she might even have a problem with her muscle control. (?) Recommend contacting a vet if it continues! good luck!

When an older, house-trained dog starts messing in the house, the first thing to rule out is medical reasons, ie, schedule a visit with your veterinarian.

You might think about taking her to a vet just to be sure that she doesn't have an incontinence problem of sorts. I had a dog that could not control his bowels in his older years and it turned out to be the brand of food we were feeding him. The vet recommended us cooking his food instead and he enjoyed white rice and hamburger the most. Most vets would not recommend people food for animals, but its not a big deal. If its nutritious for you, then its ok for them. Just be smart about what you give them...don't go buying your dog a Big Mac and Fries. Veggies are good for animals too. My dog also loved fruit.

She may need to have her anal gland cleaned. They usually do it when the dogs are groomed. The anal gland fills with fluid, fecal matter and hair. If it's not done on a regular basis it could get infected. To be safe take her to the vet.

She may have internal parasites or some other health condition. If she is going before she can make it to the door that means she cant hold it. If it happens when your around it cant be seperation anxiety so i would recommend seeing your vet soon.

Something your feed ing her is giving her loose bowels.
She is trying to make it out side so it is not intentional.
Have you changed her dog food? and has she been able to get people food? That is a real no no.
Never from experience feed your dog pizza. Unless you want to have to clean the carpets.
