I was an athiest for years, I don't recall having one Christian tell me I was going to hell, just those idiot televangelists on the TV.
For goodness sake! I lived IN Colorado Springs when Focus on the Family became big, and still never had anyone tell me that, of course, I didn't care enough to ask them what they thought either.
So I guess the question is this,
Are Christians just coming up and telling people, "You're going to burn." or is it because you asked them?

I understand it happens here quite a bit, it's awfully easy to hide behind a computer screen, but that is true on all sides.
However, you have to remember again, we all click into this section of our own accord. We could just as easily click into a cooking section, but we choose to be here.

It happens here all the time. You should see how many times I get emailed that from "christians" here. Don't get me wrong, I think the whole thing is hysterical. That is why I come her. Besides, it reinforces my reason why I left religion.

You say "I WAS an atheist for years" Does that mean you are a Christian now?
I tell people the truth, because I care about them, (whether they believe that or not).
If they take offense at God's word, then so be it. I don't run up to people and say "You're going to burn in Hell!" I tell them about hell, so they can be warned of it. Just like Jesus did. they either accept it, or they don't. But, all I can do is plant the seed. the rest is up to them. God Bless

Since hell is really the grave, not a place of fire, they were just uneducated. Those obsessed with burning do not use their reasoning ability. None of us has died and come back so the only source authority we have is the Bible written by One who created us and would know our limits.

It says in Eccles. 9:5, 10 that the dead know, feel, and do nothing at all. How is it that burning would have any effect whatsoever? Psalms 146:4 goes on to say at death a persons thoughts do perish. Attempts at torture are meaningless.

I don't associate with religious people. When on the job, it was production that counted and personal things came up rarely. The men in the bunkhouse or the berthing compartment knew I was an atheist, but there again, I was more than competent in my work and caused no problems. There were some real religious types, but they left me alone. I just never had those kind of problems.

I don't think people just walk up to a total stranger and say "You're going to hell," just like that. But I have had people say it to me, and even more write it in answers here, because I was referring to myself as a witch. And now that I refer to myself as an atheist (there's a story there), I expect it will happen again.

Most of when I've had people tell me to my face was when I was confronted by an evangelist and gave them an answer they did not like. But I've also had a co-worker ask me where I go to church and I said I didn't, as I wasn't a Christian. "Well, you should be!" he shouted, "Or you'll go to hell!" I wish I'd had the presence of mind to say, "After you, my dear!" but I was too upset. Instead, I reported the incident to my supervisor.

Only Christian fundamentalists say that.

Fundamentalism is defined as “the practice of asserting the absolute truth of your own beliefs and practices to the deliberate exclusion of the possibility of truth in the beliefs and practices of others.” It is nothing but bigotry.

Fundamentalists have this "holier than thou" attitude, which gets in your nerves. They always presume to know more about your religion and what is good for you. Fundamentalists talk as if no case could be made for the Catholic faith.

Are they our modern day Pharisees?

How can I bring myself to love them? They resort to black propaganda and lies. Here are some examples of their lies and propaganda.

+ The Pope is the Anti-Christ (they have been saying this since Martin Luther made the accusation).

+ The Church is the Whore of Babylon in the book of Revelation

+ Catholics are not Christians

+ The Catholic Church is the Mother of all harlots.

+ Catholics worship Satan

+ The Catholic Church started Islam

And to add insult to injury they justify these allegations by saying “we don't want you to go to hell,” which is just ridiculous. Do they really expect us to fall for that line?

To my fundamentalist brothers & sisters: Jesus said, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. – Matthew 7, 1-2 (KJV)

I get told I'm going to hell here on Y!A often.

I have had people tell me that they were praying for me, that they hope that someday I will find the light, people glaring at me, and I grew up in Washington, the most Atheistic State of all....

EDIT: yeah ummm, why the thumbs down?

I'm not sure I understand your question. However I think I get your point. I'm guilty of not approaching people. I don't even know to many people who are not Christians. I guess I hope my life will be a testimony. I think you have prompted me to pray for God to help me with this. Thank you for asking that question. God be with you. I mean I'll ask God to put me in places to bring His good news to those who really need it. And to help me with what to say.
