Allow him to grieve! Sure, he notices her absence. Don't try to act like nothing has happened. Give him extra love and attention and let him know that someday he will be reunited with her and see her again. Dogs understand a lot.

Give him extra special attention like more/longer walks if he is up for it. Or go for a ride if he has some joint problems. Getting out of the house is a good way to help him deal with grief. Be tolerant if he wants to go out to potty more or gets up more often at night. Sometimes it might be to check and see if she is around. Hugs and cuddles are great therapy and they don't cost a thing! And brushing feels so good and is time spent with you. Dogs know things we don't and see things we don't so he probably knows what happened. Dogs are also more enlightened than we are and deal with death and loss much better. They usually recognize that it is a natural part of life. Watch his eating and drinking habits though because these will be indicators of problems dealing with the situation. If he doesn't eat or eats too much, consult a vet. You could see if he is interested in adopting another dog by asking a local shelter if you could bring him for some introductions because if he is the only dog left, he may be lonely if you go out. Take care of you too. My dogs get soooo worried when they see me crying over my doggie that just passed. They try so hard to comfort me so I try not to cry too much around them. So try not to worry your little guy too much, comfort each other. I'm sorry for yours and your puppy's loss.

I am not sure by the wording of your question if Amelia was your dog also? If she was, he is going to grieve just as you will, just as if a relative or good friend had died. He just needs lots of EXTRA love and attention now. Spend as much time with him as you can the first few weeks. Do special things for him. Comfort him as much as you can. I am so sorry for your loss.

I would get him a new buddy ASAP! I had the same situation 15 years ago with my female collie Shawnee & her pup Sundown. She was lost for several days, and when we found her, we had to bury her.(Someone had shot and killed my beautiful collie who looked just like Lassie) He smelled her inside the blankets, so he knew it was his mother. He was sad for 2 weeks, and then I came home from work one day to find him dead. They both had been to the vet's just a month prior to this, and were in perfect health. She was only 8 and he was 6. They always seem to do better with a buddy, and since he has had one all his life, he needs one now. Good luck & I hope all works out well for you. I have never found out who killed Shawnee..lucky for them.

Consider getting another dog. He will be lonely. He wont need therapy to grieve the loss of his mother, he will be ok.

show him extra attention, I'm not sure that getting a new puppy would be a good idea, he may get less attention then and at his age, get jealous and retaliate... by going potty in the house.....
