Pastor Billy says: it's not so much annoying as it is misleading. The question is put forth not so much requesting an answer but to open up a discussion on the next question which is usually, would you like to know how to be saved? This second question incorrectly assumes there is only one answer, that being the answer belonging to the one asking it.
Most of the time so-called "born again" Protestants who use this superficial type of evangelism think they have the only biblical interpretation and of course they are incorrect.
addendum: I spent alittle time thinking on this and have come to a revelation. Denominationalism within Protestantism naturally causes certain sects to use this type of introduction simply because there is so much disagreement among non-Catholic Christians about salvation. Some say you cannot lose your salvation some say the opposite. Some say baptism is required while others disregard it and ignore biblical text which seem to support it. Others still teach in a secret coming of Christ when so-called "true believers are raptured" and salvation comes early whereas those opposed to this novel idea stick to the original understanding of Jesus returning at the end-of-time and his second and final coming as the point of offical salvation for the entire Church.
Wouldn't it be easier if they all just returned to Catholicism and believed one set of doctrine.

It does not bother me. I feel that these people are faithful to something which apparently is their rightful cause. Now unless they are going out of their way to be insulting or abusive, I say, no harm done. I mean, do we get upset when people say, "bless you," each time we sneeze? Of course not. We say, "thank you." So similarly, "are you saved" is meant with good intentions. We have the option to smile, not answer, and/or simply walk away. Why provoke and create a needless situation out of good intentions, you know! There is enough stress in this world as it. Why add to it?

It used to be, but since I've started coming back with "I'm born again", said with a great big smile, they smile back ... we both praise God ... and go on.
It's fantastic. They're pleased, and I don't get the third degree on whether my ticket to heaven is punched.
And it is absolutely true; I am born-again. The fact that Catholics define it a little differently than fundamentalists is, in my mind, not one bit deceptive. Just as some fundamentalist groups don't have a patent on being Christian, "born-again" isn't their exclusive term either.

It is a blessing that people are willing to ask. I always ask them why they are asking me and try to be sure as best I can that they are also saved. Some of my most valualble ministry has occurred when people ask me this question...all glory to God.
Peter said it like this in 2Peter 1:12.
"..I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth"
Basically Peter is saying this.....Even though I know that you know the truth I am going to keep reminding you of the truth.
This is how we edify each other in love...right?

As a Fundamentalist Christian, I do find it annoying.
I realize that they are concerned about me and where I will spend eternity, but unless they have developed a relationship, I feel like I'm being judged.
I can remember going to a friends house and having another person was there who was witnessing to my friend. The person witnessing passed me a Plan of Salvation Tract. I felt like she was making a judgment about me without knowing me.
That's why I think it's better to build a relationship with a person and if you sense that the timing is right, then share with them.

It's very difficult to have a real conversation that starts like that.
Fortunately, the religious people I talk to most (Catholics and Muslims) aren't known for using that phrase, which is a very presumptuous one. No Catholic or Muslim I know would claim certainty about who God decides to "save" or not save -- certainly not for themselves. It's a very arrogant position to take, like one is claiming to know the mind of God.

It would not hassle me via fact it relatively is in common terms a parent of speech which i understand is probably to be an advance on particularly an embarrassing question. I in many situations smile and say NO just to place them off their stride slightly

The Christians who present theirselves that way are in the wrong. They have no power to save you .Only God can do that. But they can help show you the way.Thru the word of God.
And if your not convicted of your sins they can talk until they are blue in the face - and it won't change you.
You see as a Christians the bible says to bid them to come in. That means to tell others about Christ. We are commanded by God to lead others. Please don't get so upset with others some just don't know how to go about leading others to Christ.
They have good intentions- sorry your annoyed ! I thank God every day he sent someone to show me the way to the cross.

You don't need to be by these "freaks, as you call us", you need to be saved from yourself and your sin of blasphemy. There is coming a day when you and others like you will stand before the Almighty God you mock and then give an account of every word you have said during you lifetime and then receive your eternal reward - damnation. An eternity separated from the One who loved you so much He died for you.

Freaks?
Choose your words wisely my friend for it will not be long before you will need to accounting for them. There is a really good chance that you yourselves may actually be witnesses to the second coming!
Read the words and judge for yourself (from Luke 21):
(verses 10 & 11)Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
(verses 25-28)
"There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
