I know what a mega pixel is and other really basic stuff, but when it comes down to it, I don't do well with cameras, I have no idea what to do and the only other spot they will put me for now is cashier, which I would dread.

1) visit a few websites like dpreview.com and imaging-resource.com and learn about the cameras, their features, and which ones are "highly recommended" and why they're highly recommended.

2) super technical knowledge isn't necessary for most sales. People are simply going to ask you which camera takes good photos, not WHY it takes good photos. You just need to know which cameras are really good because they're easy to use, at least to start off with.

3) Develop the technical knowledge by looking at this link:

Very good basic knowledge that increases in complexity. Easy to understand, easy to read.

Read up!

I work at Best Buy as a Certified Appliance Specialist, but I have worked in 3 other departments. You'll learn a lot from experience, and e-learning courses that you will take online, but try and do some research before hand. Customers will ask you a lot of questions about model comparisons (what's the difference between this and that) and about terms. Be ready to explain terms that make sense to customers ("the more megapixels, larger you'll be able to print off your pictures, and the better they will work"). Depending on your store type, most customers don't want a fancy, techie explanation. They want to know what the product will do for them.

And now that I've rambled... just try and read up before you go into work, but you will learn most of what you need to know through experience in the store.

Good Luck!

How about reading the product literature for the products that are on display... such as owners manuals, etc.

Learn the products you sell! The holiday shopping season is coming fast and you'd better be up on your stuff.

One thing you should NEVER do! Never give out info if you aren't sure it's true. You're better off telling a customer that you don't know something rather than saying something untrue.

i know you can't explain all about digital imaging in an answer, but why not go to the library and pick up a few books and start reading. The more you learn and work in that department, the more you'll get better at it. Talk to your co workers, maybe they can help you out also. good luck.
