No, do not lower yourself to their standard. But you need to go to them to follow up. Do not give any threat or anything like that. When you missed half a day on last Friday, did you tell them about it prior to or you were gone for half a day and they had no idea where you were? If you didn't tell them then they had the right to be mad at you. Having a child with medical needs AND a single mother are not easy. But, next time, if you need to be away from work during your schedule hours then you need to tell them about it prior to, as soon as you know that you'll be away from work. If you already informed them about it prior to (at least 24 hours prior to) and they still got mad then there is nothing you can do about it.

Have a meeting with your employer in regards to your Dr. app.
If you understood this when they hired you then they knew this
could come up. Maybe they want proof of Dr notes. If you want
to keep this job can you make up the work missed? Document all meetings with your employee and get a copy of
issues discussed. You may need this proof later on if they do
let you go. You maybe entitled to unemployment benefits. Keep proof of all Dr apps for your records. Dates times etc.
It is hard when someone is out because others have to do your work. But everyone has to take time off sometimes for
Dr. app. If they treat you unfairly then keep you eyes open for
a position where there is more understanding when it comes
to family.especially when you are a single mother trying to do

In Australia under the workplace agreements employers are not allowed to fire staff for family commitments. If you let them know this at interview stage they cant use it against you now. My advice is, find another job before they can be a bad reference. Your child is more important than this and he needs a mum who isnt stressed and distracted by crap at work.
I am going through a similar thing at my work at the moment and I know how much it can affect you. I would confront them about it, if they are going to fire you they will do it regardless but you have the right to defend yourself. Hope this helps. Maybe I should take some of my own advice lol!

How many employees does the company employee? If its over 50 in a 75 mile radius they have to offer FMLA....which would absolutely protect your job up to 12 weeks for situations such as taking care of your child's medical needs- and you can take it intermittently. Good Luck.

Make sure you have another job lined up before you quit.
It does sound like they're playing head games a bit.
See if you can let them know a few days in advance if you have to take off for a doctor's appointment.
I would not stay long.

Did you call them in advance to tell them you wouldn't be coming in to work. Or if it was it an emergency situation, did you call them as soon as possible? Could this be an issue.?

I would not quit unless I found another job first.
If they fire you, when you apply for unemployment, tell them what happened.
Be prepared for it an accept it, but don't worry about it.
