I used to run about 3X a week for about 2 miles. I'm 46 and my doctor told me I was too old and heavy to run so I quit. My blood pressure went from 120/70 to 145/95 which sucks.

I don't like to ride bikes anymore because it hurt my manhood. Should I powerwalk with weights, climb trees, or something? I think that not getting my heart rate up anymore is what has given me high blood pressure.

I believe that anyone who is in danger of running because of their weight should do power walking instead. I recommend a minimum of half an hour. Then add 10% more distance each week until you are waling for an hour. Do not walk just for exercise, but also to save fuel where ever possible. All this walking will add up to reducing your weight. Like anything else you will hit plateaus, so add variety including hills. In the gym you can use a rowing machine for a great workout. Good luck!!!

Get a new doctor !!! Or at least get a second opinion.

First, people run into their 70s and 80s these days, so that's a bogus thought.

Second, I appreciate your docs concern with your weight because excess weight can kill your knees and legs. But why didn't he put you on a strict diet instead of telling you not to run?

I suggest you get to a sports medicine doc and get a second opinion. Maybe he'll even give you a stress test to make sure you're still good, and put you on a diet.

Good Luck

If he did not tell you to stop walking then do that.
I don't see how 46 is too old to run, I have friends in their 80s who run.
