K, I took my puppy to a dog washer's, brought him home, all was fine..then that night he broke out in a rash everywhere and was bleeding from his gums lots. We took him to the vets and they said that he lost so much blood that he needed a blood transfusion, so we had one done so his blood will start clotting and he would stop bleeding. But, when got him home, he kept on bleeding, so we did another one, and he's on vitamin K, Antibiotics and steriods(they think he has a clotting problem) now he won't eat, or drink, we have to hydrate him through a med dropper. I am on my last straw and dont' know what else to do, the docs dont' know what's wrong, and think he may have gotten into some rat poison at the washers. So what I'm asking is if anybody has any idea or suggestions.....esp to help him start clotting?! Anyone Pleaz?!

If he got into rat poison,he will most likely have to have vitamin K injections, and then oral vitamin K for several weks.He may also need more blood transfusions.Watch him closely and make sure he gets plenty of meat and give him some raw liver ( to help build red blood cells.) Also, tell the groomer that if they have rat poison sitting around, they had better watch out, before any more dogs are poisoned. If you're sure that's where the dog got into the poison, then I think you should ask for them to pay the vet bill as well.I hope your dog will be OK.

agreed, rat poison causes problems with the clotting factors in an animals blood. I would recommend that you take him to an emergency facility that can offer 24 hour care. The practice that I work at keeps these kinds of patients for several days and we normally do 2-3 transfusions and give lots of IV fluids. Just so you know, the veterinarians can't see the internal damage that was done. The intestines/heart/liver etc. could be severly damaged and in cases like this, if the dog survives, it's life is generally shortened. Sorry for the bad news. Also, it could just be taking a little while for him to come back around. If the vet has done a hematocrit and it is at a sufficient level, then he may just be feeling sick still. Think of when you are sick .. it takes awhile to be 100% again

I feel so bad for you. It does sound like rat poisoning as that will cause the bleeding and anti-clotting. Hopefully with time and having the poison flushed from his system will revive your poor little guy. I dont have any suggestions for the clotting, I am sure that your vet is doing everything possible on that end but as far as the hydration I have heard that giving dogs Pedialyte is excellent. Make sure you ask your vet before you give it though. My thoughts are with you and your puppy. I will look for an update

The groomers need to be reported. It is clear something happened to your dog while it was there. I think I would call your vet again and tell them he is getting worse, or call an emergency clininc and take him in. They need to keep your dog and do everuything they can to try to save him. Make sure you keep all records because you will have a very good case for a civil suit against the groomers. I am so sorry this has happened to your dog. Call the groomers and tell them what has happened!! Something is very wrong and it is their fault. I hope and pray he will be okay.

Most important point = your vet did the right appropriate thing! Best thing for your puppy is maybe to take it to an emergency/critical care vet service for continual monitoring. Your pet sounds very sick, and would benefit from 24 hour care if you want the best outcome. Consult specialty/referal veterinary services.
