A few years ago I had one dog, a Border Collie x Springer Spaniel and she adored our cat. They slept in the same bed, drank from the same bowl at the same time and used to play together all the time.

We now have 4 dogs and a cat. Two of the dogs are fine with cats and happily share a bed with our cat. One dog would kill the cat if he caught her so the cat stays out of his way and the other dog is a puppy who thinks it is great fun to chase the cat at the moment.

The dogs who have been/are good with cats have been brought up with them whereas the dog who would kill the cat is a rescue and wasn't socialised with cats at an early age.

Cats are sensible creatures and will fit in with the dogs they live with. It is not often that you get examples of the two species that will not tolerate each other.

By far the best option is to introduce dogs and cats as youngsters, but it is possible to add adult cats to a dog that is tolerant of cats.

Whatever you do, do NOT try to mix a cat-hating dog and a cat, you will end up with a dead cat.

I have never had any problem with my cats and dogs getting on with each other. In fact my current dog ( a labrador ) and my Birman cat get along great and really seem to love each other.

When I first got my Birman, as a 6 week old kitten, I had 2 golden retriever bitches and they were so maternal towards her that they came into milk and the kitten fed off them. Growing up with them she slept with them in their beds. They have both died now and she is 13 but she accepted my labrador puppy quite happily 3 years ago and they are the best of friends.

I have 2 large dogs and a large cat. They are not friends but they don't fight either. They prefer to ignore each other and if my younger dog becomes annoying to the cat, the cat will hiss at her and skulk away, annoyed.
