Madeira is my favourite - nice people, beautiful flowers, and a good climate for me; I don't like it too hot and if the temperatures rise in August, you can always go up into the mountains.
Being a small island in the Atlantic it does rain but that's what makes it so beautiful.
In the 25 years I've been visiting, our friends there have only bought a winter coat once.
Never heard of earthquakes, mudslides, tornadoes or huge fires there, but we do get the occasional earthquake in the UK - you just turn over and go back to sleep!
