Stem cell research is legal. However, the research must be funded by private money in most cases.

The federal government has set aside limited funding for research on only a few stem cell lines, but most researchers agree that this is not enough.

The use of stem cells for curing diseases will require FDA approval. So far, the scientific benefits of using stem cells haven't been proven. There haven't even been any clinical trials yet. The theory, though, says that stem cells will be useful for curing diseases in the future. The "future" would come along much faster if there was more funding for research.
