It depends on what you believe is a "good dog".
Rotts need basic (at least) obedience, socialization and a firm, kind owner. If you are willing to put in the time and energy, a lot of it, you will have a wonderful all around dog. It's helpful to read up on the breed, maybe meet some breeders and their dogs. Talk with them. Ask questions. A lot of a dog's personality is genetic. Good breeders will tell you the pros and cons of the breed and their particular dogs. As with people, some dogs are more shy, reserved, suspicious, outgoing, forgiving. Some of the inherited traits can be changed thru educated training and a lot of time. It's helpful to start with the kind of temperament, dog, you want and build on what is there to begin with.

Rott’s can make very good companions and even family pets. One most realize that they are a breed that is naturally a bit more aggressive. As long as you are a good pack leader and don’t let the dog dominate you or any other person, or even other animals. That it always knows you are the Pack leader, everything should be ok. You should enroll in training classes or if you want to train your dog yourself. Taking classes can always help because these people are trained in what they do and can give you good advice.
I volunteer at a shelter and we have had a few Rott’s in and all of them have been really good friendly dogs. One of them was this enormous Rott biggest Rott I have ever seen and he was a big teddy bear. And that was even after he had come from not such a good home, he had been rescued.

I had a male and female my male passed away a few months ago. If u never had a rottie read up on them they can be hard headed and they are big dogs alot of people say they are bad, mean but the dog is as good or bad as its owner my dogs sat out on halloween to welcome the kids i can walk them off leash and they wouldnt leave my side even when others critters are runnin around. U have to get it young and work work work with them DONT put it chained in your back yard and expect it to be a good dog. Good Luck
BTW my neighbor had a Welsh Corgie that my dogs would break down the fence to play with or he would Houdini in my yard to play with my dogs. My Mom had 2 rotties a poodle 2 cats all in the house and the one cat ran the pack so they do get along with small animals if socialized properly
Next all my dogs want to do is cuddle try having a 150 lb or his 120 mate both fighting over your lap and wanting to lay with u when i am layin on the floor i know one will be layin on my chest

Of course they can be! Some breeds are more prone to certain types of personalities but really with any breed it depends mainly on how they're brought up.
Here's AKC's standard for Rotty temperament
Temperament
The Rottweiler is basically a calm, confident and courageous dog with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. A Rottweiler is self-confident and responds quietly and with a wait-and-see attitude to influences in his environment. He has an inherent desire to protect home and family, and is an intelligent dog of extreme hardness and adaptability with a strong willingness to work, making him especially suited as a companion, guardian and general all-purpose dog.

They're some of the best dogs I've ever had the pleasure of caring for. You do however have to know the breed and dogs in general pretty well if you want to have one, its not something to go rushing into. And you should socialize them a ton when they're little, with dogs, cats, small animals, so you can teach them not to go after them. I knew a rottie whos best friend was a jack russle. Very very sweet dogs. The rottie was his big brother and protector. He was also very sweet and gentle with the jack, even when he was hangin off his scruff (most dogs wouldn't tolerate that very well). Good luck and read up on any breed before you get one, they're all unique!

They sure are! But then again, I'm a bit biased :)
They need training early on as they are a very POWERFUL dog. They are intelligent, trainable, and athletic dogs.Like many large/heavy breeds they are prone to certain medical conditions including hip dysplasia. Also, because they are so strong and because some tend to be a bit protective they are not necessarily the best choice for a first-time owner. So if you are thinking about getting one, do some research first and make sure you know what you're getting in to :)

Rotts are great dogs, howevver, they need a firm hand and a lot of training. They are very focused dogs, and can get into trouble easily. If you are getting a puppy, they need to be trained from the day they walk into your house. Many folks decide to wait until the dog is older for training, however, you must immediately get control with the dog.
As long as they properly socialized, trained, worked with, and exercised, a rott is a great dog. One thing to know, some of them have a tendency to drool.

YES,They are wonderful dogs!!
They are very smart, wonderful with kids, and other animals. They are easy to train and just make wonderful pets.
now there are going to be people on here who say that they are not good dogs. but these people do not know what they are talking about.
My ex hubby's family has raised Rotts for 30 years and I have owned several my self. we have never had any troubles with our dogs ever. Just remember that there is no such thing as a bad dog or a bad breed just bad owners.
If you are looking for a wonderful loving cuddle partner a Rott is your dog.
They are just an all around wonderful dog. They are genital giants.

I do rotty rescue, and have for a long time. I have 2 right now. I take abused,or neglected or both. I, with all of my experience, am totally committed to the breed. I have had many breeds of dogs, and mixed breeds, and I loved them all-but I am a rotty lover and protector of the breed. I do not know why you are asking, but Yes, I think that they are a great breed--but it does depend on their history.
