There are some kits available out there, for doing that. Try Radio Shack web site, or their stores.
You could just connect you tape machine to your computer sound plug, and use the Sound Recorder in your Accesories listings.
It only records in one minute bites, I'm not sure if that can be adjusted for longer recordings.
Do some searching on the web, for other ideas.
They can be transferred by a professional, but can be pretty expensive, if you have lots of tapes.

Buy a 3.5mm to phono lead and connect the line out of your tape deck to the line in of your computer.

Then download Audacity (it's free!) and use that to record the sound. You'll need to put in track breaks manually though.

I USE PLUS!ANALOG,WHICH IS MADE BY MS ,IT REMOVES HISS AND POP ,LETS YOU DECIDE THE BYTE RATE YOU WANT TO USE AND WHEN ITS FINISHED IT PUTS IT ON THE PLAYLIST YOU SET UP AND MOVES IT TO WMP...WHERE YOU CAN THEN BURN IT TO CD...I HAVE USED IT FOR MUSIC TAPES...AUDIOBOOKS AND FOR MY LPS...IT REALLY WORKS VERY WELL
