Their feud goes back to economics and oppression from England.
In general, the native Irish were Catholic and poor. When the rich protestants came in from England and started taking over, of course the Catholics fought for their rights.
Religion is only the superficial excuse for the fighting.

The issue in Northern Ireland is political not religious. The media, who is always looking for short cuts and not the whole story, calls the participants Catholics and Protestants.
The conflict is about whether the British territory (probably the wrong word) of Northern Ireland should remain British or should become part of Ireland.
The majority of people in Ireland are Catholics. The majority of people in England and Northern Ireland are Protestants. There are actually Catholics and Protestants on either side.
The terrorists on either side of the issue are not Christian in any sense of the word.
With love in Christ.

Protestants went to Ireland and took over. They had money. The Catholics were poor and the Protestants did little except exploit them and make their lives even more miserable. As technology grew the divide between rich and poor (Protestant and Catholic) grew larger. The Protestants created the Orange Order and the Catholics the IRA. Both sides did battle with the other.
My opinion is that it is Irish land and Irish blood should be who controls Irish land. Protestants are British by ethnicity and not Irish (for the most part).

Because the English waltzed in imagining they owned the place and had every right to take advantage because Ireland was poor--they exploited the Irish and treated them like dogs. The Irish got mad, we fought back, and won, for the most part.
