Just a note for those quoting the "Vatican's chief exorcist" and the Roman Catholic Church's official stand on this:
1) It is not the place of the Vatican's chief exorcist to "blacklist" books. His comments were his personal opinion and not an official declaration of the Vatican. In other words, even if you are Roman Catholic, there is no need to agree with his personal opinion.
2) To the best of my knowledge, the Roman Catholic Church has not denounced the Harry Potter books (please correct me if I am wrong).

P.S. I find it odd that my fellow-Christians make statements like "Harry Potter is a witch", "there is divination in those books". Let me make a few things clear.
1) Harry Potter is not a witch, wizard, warlock, sorcerer, or any other thype of magician. He is not even real!
2) There is no divination in the Harry Potter stories. Not one single prediction made in these books has come true, nor have the books suggested that any of the predictions made would actually come true.
3) There is no witchcraft or spellcasting, or even an attempt to emulate an actual spell, in the Harry Potter books. These books are *completely* devoid of magic. It's all made up! All of it! Honest!

Considering that the whole premise is fantasy, I find it hard to accept the condemnation of God. I don't think God thinks any ficticious character is itself evil.
On the other hand, what individuals take away from the books and movies is another matter. For a mature or adolescent individual to embrace the evil aspects of the movie because it appears as 'counter-culture' may result in, for some individuals, behavior in support of evil, specifically directed to be against his/her society.
Some also see the opportunity for individuals to substitute the bogus practices of 'magic' for spiritual and social structures. For those young people who do so, the loss is strategic and substantial.
So, it may not be as dumb as you propose, and if it is the dumbest thing you have ever heard, then you may consider paying better attention... there are some real wacko ideas out there.

I have many peers that detest Harry. But i like Harry Potter. I learned that none of them had ever even learn the books, however they have watched the films. They are both judging the sequence founded at the films or they only wish to make themselves seem distinctive from the leisure of the arena by way of announcing they hate Harry. They haven't any cause to, they only do it for exposure. But yeah, i additionally believe the primary reply.

They're going off some old book... aka the bible.
Nit-picking phrases and rules that fit their motive at the moment. There are hundreds of "rules" in the OT that condone such things as rape, murder, genocide, etc... but noooo let's just grab the phrases against witches. *rolls eyes*
I dont give their babble a second thought. Harry Potter series was interesting and got my little sister to actually pick up a book.
EDIT:
See below for proof.... all from the OT. :) Thank for proving my point guy.

Well if it angered God that others practiced sorcery then most likely he isn't pleased with Harry Potter books, influencing evil upon the minds of children. Here are a couple of examples what God says about sorcery:
Leviticus 19:26
" 'Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it. " 'Do not practice divination or sorcery.
2 Kings 21:6
He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger.
It seems that evil and sorcery kind of go together.

Everything has the potential for good and evil. It depends more on the individual receiving it. Many will be fascinated by the possibilites of their spirit. And seek knowledge. Maybe become healers. But dark hearted individuals will search into these things for selfish gain, and to injure.

Harry Potter isn't evil, unless people take it too seriously and treat it more than just a story.

I don't think He thinks Harry Potter is evil. I do think that He thinks people are being to judgmental, to self-righteous, and take some things way to seriously and other things way to lightly.

It is dumb, but they will say that God did, in fact, tell them that Harry Potter is wicked. I don't feel like looking up the chapter and verse, but Exodus says 'thou shalt not suffer a witch to live,' and Leviticus says to kill wizards or anyone who has a familiar spirit.
Still...he is just a fictional character.
