Okay so long story short my parents are divorced and I am going to France this summer, but I don't have my passport. I stopped going over to my father's house and I'm fourteen. Well I have to be fifteen to just get my passport, but because I'm fourteen I need to get both of my parents signatures on some document thing and my father refuses to sign it. How can I get a passport? Please help me!!

The state dept´passport information says you MUST have signature of BOTH parents if you are UNDER 14. Since you are 14, that looks like that is NOT the case. Talk toyour Mom, read the page together, print out the forms, get your documents together, and go to the post office together. If passport officials decide they want both parents signatures...which they MAY have the right to do, your Mom will need to deal with this by negotiating with your father or through her lawyer. It would also be good , for many reasons, for you to try to repair the relationship with your father if you possibly can. Good Luck to you.

In Australia, this issue is resolved by getting a Family Court order either requiring the parent to sign, or authorising the issue of a passport and travel without the signature. There may be a similar system where you come from. I have never had to do this as my ex-wife has always consented.

There is also an international convention that requires the consent of a non-accompanying parent if a child is travelling with only one parent. Canada requires it. The US does not. I don't know about France.

Which is all a monumental pain, and unnecessarily expensive.
