This captain doesn't:

He's been granted conscientious objector status by the US Army on the basis that Jesus has taught him to love his enemies, not kill them.

What do you think of this? Is he right?

Hiwutzup: The Iraqis attacked us? When? It's so hard to keep up with the news these days...

Jcklrsn: Of course not. I'm addressing them because I'd specifically like to know their viewpoint on this article, as it is about an American Christian.

If Jesus is reading some of the so called Christians answers he will come back sooner and tell them that is not what Christianity is all about.
Christianity= peace not wars.

NO! Name 3 good reasons why we are at war. If that's to hard, name 1. I thought we were after Osma, but all of a sudden we attack Iraq? If we pull out, then the Iraqis will feel safer and all the terrorist problems will go away. Geez, Bush is an idiot, bombing Iraq using money that could be used saving kids lives from all steps of life.

No.Definitely not.
We were never attacked by Iraq.
Iraq didn't have WMD.
Iraq wasn't involved in the attacks on 9/11.

We are there simply because George Jr. wanted to finish a war that daddy started. We have destroyed a country and made it more a haven for terrorists than it ever was.

I'm American christian. I think the war is right for several reasons.

Iraq violated terms of the peace treaty all the time, and attacked the US by firing on the US airforce a ton of times over the 11 or so years of the Peace between the wars. This coupled with Saddam's support of terrorism (aka, paying a reward to Palestinian families who had a member blow him self up and kill some Jews) And constant posturing like he had the weapons, all in the environment of the taste of 9/11 fresh, made going to war easy.

Osama declared war on the US in a reaction to the 91 gulf war and how Americans defiled the holy land by having boots on the ground in Saudi. Saddam was seen over there as a victor, hell, he was still in power. It was time to finish it off.

Simply put. We just needed a place to have the battle front against terrorist. We're there and the terrorist flock from around the region to kill us, rather then using the same resources to plan/carry out attacks in America.

Being christian does not mean you can't support taking measures that you hope will pay peace full dividends to future generations.

I believe that the war in Iraq is part of the troubles that will ultimately bring on the end of this world, and the return of Jesus. It fits right into the prophecy. There will never be peace over there.

I don't think our being there is accomplishing anything, but I support our soldiers, just not the mission they have been sent on.

And yes, I believe in the rights of conscientious objectors.

Yes.

A man pulls a gun on a cop and the cops partner, who the man doesn't see, shoots and kills the man. It is later discovered that the man had no bullets in his gun. Does this make the partner a murderer? Of course not. The partner responded appropriately to a legitimate threat. The presence or absence of bullets is could not be known and is thus irrelevant. Saddam Husein was a legitimate threat. The Democrats saw it, the Republicans saw it, the whole world saw it. As a nation we responded appropriately to that threat by removing Saddam and his regime. Now obviously we can't just leave the country in ruin for Iran or Al-Qaeda to take over. We must finish the job and restore stability to the region.

Your view of Jesus is very Black and White and your understanding of his teachings is vague. You can love your enemies and still take action to prevent them from killing you. If necessary you can love your enemies and still kill them to prevent them from killing or harming the innocent.

Christianity isn't as simple or as shallow as you think.

There is no justification in waging a war in Iraq other than trying to control some of the oil in the region and spreading capitalism in a population that strongly opposes it. That is the one of most stupid decisions ever made by a US president.

Jesus or Christianity has nothing to do with this.

By the way, Christianity doesn't oppose a war if it's justified. For example, to defend one's country or to have a war against terrorism. Killing in a war is not hating your enemies. It's defending oneself.

Do I have to be a Christian to answer this? I'm not a Christian, I'm atheist. However, I do not believe that the actions taken by America and the coalition is justified, sure, go to Afghanistan to track down terrorists...but why go after Iraq as well? WMDs? Well...so far that I know of, there were none. Maybe I'm wrong...since, as you say, it's so hard to keep up with the news these days. I think Bush went there just to finish up his fathers war. That's my opinion. I hope this helps. I know you said Christan's but, oh well....

The war is justified for the freedom of the people. However, unfortunately I cannot see the possibility of pulling out the troops. It will make America vulnerable. And read your bible. God declared war on people throughout the pages due to false gods. I know of many who have been to Iraq. they agree that we should be there. I even saw a interview with some parents who lost their son, and even they are for keeping the troops there. NO matter what kind of war you have, or who it is with, there will always be people who are for it, and those who will be against it. And as for Bush, well, I did vote for him. Do I regret it? I don't know. But he is definitely not the worst president that America has ever had!
