I have a prom theme night to go to for a freinds 30th birthday but hate suits although love smart clothes (dont look great in a suit), any assistance appreciated in this dilemar!

black slacks...black dress shoes... nice colored dress button up shirt like a blue or red. And a matching tie... no need for a jacket.

Have you ever looked at old prom photos?! Fashions are alwasy trendy so they look very goofy after years pass. don't worry about not looking good ina suit because NO GUY will look great in an old 80's outfit...for 60's proms you would need a black suit from thrift shop, shorten pants so they're showing your ankles and wear white sox and a skinny tie OR black pants, same white sox, and a white sports coat and pink carnation. If your gal is going 80's, you need a pale blue tuxedo and bright cummerbund. As it is a 30th birthday party, the late 70's, early 80's look would most likely be the pale tuxedo thing. The bright colored cummerbund is necessary for sure! Have fun!!

I don't know, it depends on you. There's lots of things that need to be taken into consideration here, such as your height, you weight, your build etc. . .
I have never met you so i wouldn't be able to say, perhaps you would be better off asking some of your close friends, ones that know you well and have met you.
You say you don't like suites, so how about a pair of smart jeans? A shirt would look nice with them too, possibly even a tie. Clean trainers. Jewelry if you have got any. Perhaps a chain. Do something with your hair.
Get a girls opinion too, even if it's your mum or sisters :-)

Sooo, CHUCK...why not do the Don Johnson spin and wear a great pair of blue jeans, not too dark, not too faded a sexy t-shirt with no writing and a sport jacket? Looks good, still "promy" and hot to boot.
The theme is rather...uhm...interesting.

Proms means, suit and tuxedo. I am a woman who hates dresses, but for the graduation ball, it had to be done. Go for it - it is one night that is special. Enjoy looking different from your usual self for one evening!

Go to a thrift store and find an old tuxedo. Wear the coat, white shirt (with studs), cumberbun with some great jeans and a kick-*** pair of boots.

You wear tuxes, not suits, to prom. The best way to find a tux that looks good on you is to go to a store like Men's Warehouse, where they have seen it all (they managed to find a tux for my 5'3" fiance with football player shoulders). They can help you find THE type of tux that looks good on you.
