She has just turned 4, but has become more lethargic recently, spending pretty much all day asleep on the top level of her sctratching post, and only really gets down briefly to eat for a few minutes when I first put her food out in the morning. Also she seems ot have become less confident when getting down from high surfaces, going gradually to lower and lower levels, rathe than jumping straight donw as she used to. Is there something I should worry about and take her to a vet, or is she just getting older?

it's hard to tell in these cases and 4 years old is not old. you can call to ask a vet on whether or not you should bring him in for an examination.
my cat became lethargic one day and still ate normally, but a week or so later he started to stop eating as much and then eventually it got worse from there.
i would watch how much food intake he is getting everyday and if he appears to be eating less and more lethargic (like when you put a toy near him or play with him he doesn't seem interested) then I would take him to the vet if this was my cat.
but it's up to you if you are worried there is something wrong.

There may be something wrong with her, take her to your vet and have her checked out. At this point in time she is considered to be 28 years old, if the cat has had a hard time in her early life, it can be considered older. It depends on the stresses, anxiety's, it may have experienced. It also depends on the type of cat it is. Some breeds are a lot more lazy than others.

She is probably just getting older they do that as they grow up to where they hardly even play my cat is 6 yrs old and she sleeps most of the day as Long as she is eating and drinking OK I would not worry about it. However if it was sudden then you might want to take her to the vet.

Your cat is still young! My two cats are 10 years old and still bring 'little presents' home, jump in and out of the windows and race round the house. I think you should take her to the vet for your own peace of mind and to make sure she's not in any pain.

A sudden change in behavior is always a reason to take the cat to the vet.
She's still a young cat, much too young for this behavior to be due getting older.

When I fasted for nine days (only apple juice) I was amazed at the amount of energy I had. We are not aware of how much energy is required to digest food. If your cat eats only dry food she is spending a lot of time just digesting it. Cats on meat-only diets have more energy.

At 4 years old, your kitty should be in her prime though not a rambunctious kitten any more. You might want to have her tested for a number of things, including arthritis.
Good luck.

She's older and it's colder outside. They really are more of a nocturnal animal by nature too. I would only worry if she stops eating, drinking, or you notice that she is having other problems.
