man, if the question is "what do YOU think happens after death" why are people quoting the bible? do they not think for themselves?

i think we go into the ground and feed bugs and plants. there is no afterlife. just and end to all pain and suffering...which is very peaceful in a way.

I have two hypotheses. One is that nothing at all happens except that your body decays. Your consciousness is just gone like the candle flame when you blow it out.

The other hypothesis is that your soul gets the opportunity to review what you have learned in this lifetime, and what you still need to learn, probably with the aid of some sort of guide, and then you choose your next mother and off you go. Try again until you get it just right.

The only reason I half-way believe this latter scenario is that I had a near-death experience that was like that, except that the guide pointed out that one option was to go back to the body I still had and keep trying to improve my situation. Of course, if ones body is sufficiently trashed -- airplane accident or something -- then moving on would be the only option.

But neurosurgeons have found the part of the brain that is involved in such near-death experiences, and they conclude you basically see what you expect to see. That's why I only half-belief it.

The ceasing of all functions of life. After breathing, heartbeat, and brain activity stop, the life-force gradually ceases to function in body cells. Death is the opposite of life.
Psalm 90:10 says that the usual human life span is 70 or 80 years. That was true when Moses wrote it, but that was not so from the beginning. (Compare Genesis 5:3-32.) Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is reserved for men to die once for all time.” This, too, was true when it was written. But it was not the case before God passed judgment on sinful Adam. Gen. 3:19: “In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”
Eccl. 9:10: “All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol [“the grave,” KJ, Kx; “the world of the dead,” TEV], the place to which you are going.”
John 11:11-14: “‘Lazarus our friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep.’ . . . Jesus said to them outspokenly: ‘Lazarus has died.’” (Also Psalm 13:3)
Ezek. 18:4: “The that is sinning—it itself will die.”
Isa. 53:12: “He poured out his soul to the very death.” (Compare Matthew 26:38.)

IMO, all living things have souls, be they human, dog, butterfly, rose, or maple. When a living thing dies, three things can happen.
1.) Its soul goes to the afterlife Heaven/Summerland/Nirvana/Call it what you will. I see it as a great pool where all souls gather to stay for eternity or to be reincarnated later, depending on Godd and/or Karma.
2.) Its soul is immediately reincarnated.
3.) Its soul remains on earth as a ghost to finish something first before it moves on to step 1 or 2. That something can be learn a lesson it should have learned or to finish a job it started or to act as a guard for a location or person. That's why houses can be haunted, IMO.
When a soul is reincarnated, it can come back as any life form, be it what it was when it died or a human soul can return as a dog, a butterfly's soul can return as a rose, or a maple's soul can return as a human, etc. depending on Godd and/or Karma.

Depending on how you lived your life, you either go to Paradise or Prison and await the judgement... The judgement happens at the end of the millenium and the "little season"...

I don't know. I think the soul survives, but I don't know about the whole "Pearly Gates, harps, angels floating around" schtick.

I guess I'll find out.
