My dad gave me money for a snack at the gas station by my house and I was walking there and a cop pulled up next to me and he said you cant be walking around here you need to be with a adult.

I'm small for my age but I'm 12 not a little kid! I said i was just going to get a pop and he stopped the car and got out and told me that I had to get in the police car and he was taking me home. Well I thought maybe he was crazy or not really a cop cuz he was acting weird so I said no to him and he screamed at me that i was resisting a officer and if I didn't want to go to jail get in the car now!

I was scard so I ran home and then the officer told my dad that I needed to be taught to obey the police.

Is that normal?

p.s. seanny I used spell check.

What did I do wrong? - You ran from the police. This is often a bigger issue than many things you get stopped for.

I would say you did the right thing! There are crazy wierdos these days that are snatching our kids anyway they can.. Even acting and dressing like a police officer sometimes. OK, so it was really a cop, but that was a bit over the limit, and if he had not been, you could be dead now! Best to get a lecture from the cop then to get in that car and maybe lose your life! Good Job Kiddo! Clue all your friends in to do the same in those circumstances.. I am all for the law, but better safe than sorry in this kind of instance..

You did exactly the right thing by refusing to get in the car and running home If the officer had been a REAL policeman , he would have understood that you were frightened. No policeman would treat a child that way. Just because he also told your dad he was a policeman doesn't mean he was. You need to be very careful. Have your dad check out this man with the police department. He may try to pick you up again. You used your head and possibly saved your life.

It could be that there was a curfew in effect in that area. or maybe it's a bad area. Either way the officer shouldn't have treated you like that. He is a stranger, and I think you did the right thing running home. Hopefully your parents took your side in this situation. Giving the officer the benefit of the doubt, he could have been concerned about your safety. and may have been having a bad day.

Actually in this day and age I think you did well. If you got that "odd feeling" from him then you did right and you should do the same thing the next time. While I generally trust in the police, you should never trust blindly. Trust your family above all else.

sprcpt - This person is not correct. "abuse of power by the police" is NOT normal.

I am amazed at how many people are taking a side here. I don't think we are getting all of the details from your one side of the story. The officer should have chased you down, apprehended you using the least amount of force necessary and turned you over to your parents in handcuffs. The idea that since you think you are right, you have the right to resist the police is absurd.

In some cities, there are laws that restrict minors from being in certain places without their parents. The proper thing for you to have done would be to either

1. tell him to park his car and walk back to your house with you and talk to your dad, or
2. ask to see his badge.

HI OLIVER
NO YOU DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG.SOME COPS JUST ACT LIKE JERKS!!!!!!!!!!!SOME COPS TAKE THEIR AUTHORITY FOR GRANTED.(MOST LIKELY HE WAS NOT VERY POPULAR IN SCHOOL). YOU DID THE RIGHT THING BY NOT GETTING IN THE CAR WITH HIM. HIS BEHAVIOR WAS NOT NORMAL.I WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN IN THE CAR WITH HIM EITHER.
P.S GLAD TO KNOW YOU USED SPELL CHECK!!!!!!!!(LOL)

You had every right to do what you did. This officer needs to go back to the academy to learn how to relate to people. There is a right way and a wrong way to get a point across. This officer clearly chose the wrong way.

I hope that your dad reports him to his superior. It is one thing to express concern to an individual about their surroundings but quite another to bully them.
