You can do anything that's in your reach!

The advantages of this would be that people won't have to travel to see an OS, since you'll be one, and can have the treatment done in your office.

The only disadvantage I thought of would be that your insurance rates, malpractice included, will be higher, since you will be a surgeon and not a general dentist, for the most part.

Good for you that you have this goal! Best of Luck!

In general, oral surgeons make more money because their procedures are more expensive. There are exceptions of course like general dentists who specialize in cosmetic procedures. However, it is very difficult for a general dentist to acquire an exclusive cosmetic clientele. It is a very lucrative field and thus the competition for it is high. The reality is you will have to do mostly non-cosmetic work if you choose to focus in general dentistry.

Also, you will likely do an additional 5 years after dental school so after that, will you really want to do general dentistry after you spent so many hours in the operating room.

First of all, you're not going to get into dental school if you don't say "an oral surgeon" and "advantages and disadvantages."

Pros with Maxfac Surgeon: Loads of respect, MRFSA after your name and loads of publication in your name....

Cons : Less money as consultants in Maxfac dont earn much and 10 years of studying to get there which you could have spent doing other things..life is to short...and oh, you get grey hair after one year....
