Yes you can burn a AVI file to DVD, but you will not be able to watch it on a stand alone DVD player. If your intention is to watch your movie on TV then you need to run a conversion software to convert the avi format to DVD format.
The one I am using now is called convertxtodvd. You have to pay for it, but it is so easy to use. Just drag and drop the file you want converted into a box and click 1 button. It will even burn it for you too. And it's a relatively quick process. (Depends on your PC and the DVD burner). This support many formats. Including the one you want.

Yeah. You could make a DATA DVD with Nero Burning ROM and just drag your avi files. You will keep them in the same format, no need to convert and stuff. And not only avi,u can use any type of files mp3,jpg,and sooooooo on...converting takes time;)but that depends on what u need for.If it's for backing up stuff, use as I told it's the most simple. If you want to play an avi movie on a dvd player then u must convert.Converting takes time and increases the space of a file.depends.;)

to play on a dvd player i think it needs to be converted, but you can store it as an avi on a dvd as a backup or to move it somewhere.

Yes, you can burn avi to dvd. If you don't have Nero, then you can use this free software to burn your video files to DVD for free. All you need to do is download Cucusoft DVD burner Pro and it will convert Mpeg/Mov/RMVB/DivX/AVI to DVD. I use it all the time and it really works great. Here is a step-by-step guide and a link to download the software.

You can burn any sort of a file to DVD as data.
To VIEW that, you'll need a computer, or a DVD player capable of playing DIVX/XVID/MPEG4.
If you want to use a regular DVD player, then you'll need to convert AVI to a Video DVD.

If the dvd is re-writable, yes. You can use Windows Media Player for this or windows explorer (drag, drop onto cd letter folder and right click, select burn).
