My vet took a blood test and said my little Mini Pin Dog is anemic. Low red blood cells. He is only 8 years. He is an indoor dog and does not have fleas or ticks. Does anyone know what I can do for him to get better faster? (besides the good Multi Vitamin and Minerals I give him) He lost most of his energy and seems so sad and inactive. Thanks

I am not sure why some of you seem like I don't know what my vet said. I have actually taken him to the vet 3 times now in 2 weeks and the vet said to give him a good multi vitamin and gave him a steroid shot, but that is all he said he could do right now and to give it a week from when he gave him the shot yesterday. Then I came onlne to try to see any online vets or remedies because I am REALLY worried about him. That is when I saw a question about anemia in dogs on Yahoo, which is why I decided to ask here to see if anyone else may have been through this with their dog and may have some points on more to do so he will feel better faster. Sorry, but I am jst so concerned and he seems to be feeling so weak. Thanks, Robyn

I think perhaps you should go to another vet. Anaemia has MANY causes - it's no good just treating the immediate problem, if you don't find out what the cause is the dog will never be better. Multi-vitamins shots and steroids is not good enough - your dog is having a problem replacing and/or producing red blood cells.

Anaemia can be caused by a blood parasite, a congenital defect, liver problems, a ruptured spleen or internal tumour, leukaemia - this list is very long. If this vet didn't even attempt to find a cause for the anaemia, go to another one fast.

Do NOT waste time trying to figure out the problem yourself online. You could be completely barking up the wrong tree while your dog is getting more and more ill. Anaemia is a serious and complicated medical condition that can only be treated with veterinary advice, NOT DIY treatment or advice from strangers.

Well if he did have anemia, they probably wouldve given you pills, or if it was really serious, they would of done a blood transfusion. I remember my first husky ( RIP Wolfy ) suffered from that when he was about 6 months old. He made through with alot of iron suppliments from the vet, and some pills from the ER vet..

I am betting your vet would have told your a course of treatment when you got your test results.

Wouldn't your vet have told you that?? I am sure he didn't say "go home and ask for a home remedy on YA!!".

He would have taken care of the recommendation or a prescription.
