My brother recently had skin cancer removed from his neck.. He's very fair skined. Dermatologist wants him to stay out of the sun.. He loves all outdoor activities! It's near to impossible, so he puts loads of sun protection lotion on and doesn't lay out for any long periods of time.. It was beginning to bother him psychologically tho. He would feel guilty if he swam in my pool for a 1/2 hour. His doc wanted to see him every 3 months and would make comments, like."Oh.. I see you've been in the sun..Some tan here and there" He had to ditch that dermatologist. The guy had him feeling guilty and depressed. I told my brother, that he might as well have skin cancer and be dead if his life was being so badly affected mentally by this guy.. He's looking for another one and will go once a year as he feels that should be enough.

Nope, I don't lay in the sun for a tan, even with the threat of skin cancer.

Both my mother and my father had skin cancer removed. It was very painfull procedure and it ended with scars on their faces, arms, backs, and legs. The doctors put a thick tar like substance on the skin to burn out the cancer. It peels the skin off layer by layer and is extremely painful. They cut the cancer out of the skin on their faces, and that left scars as well.

My mother's was caused by excesive sun bathing, my father's from a lifetime of working in the elements, long before sunscreen was an option. If they had it to do over, they would have done things differently, but it is too late for them. It isn't for me or my children.

Yes, even dark skinned individuals can get skin cancer. The risk is slightly less, but it is a fact nonetheless. Everyone needs to use sunscreen, not just the light skinned folks.

no, have no patience to lie around by the pool anymore, but i work around the house and my friend's stable - out in the sun for hours...no sunscreen. at this point in my life, i imagine the damage has pretty much already been done and it's just a matter of time before...whatever - so using a sunscreen now would be like closing the proverbial barn door, you know?
