I got caught chewing gum in class. I know that you are not supposed to chew it in class and i did it anyway but i got After School Detention (ASD)!! Is this a fair punishment for this small misdemeanor? I personaly don't think so. Please post your opinion.

I was not warned previous to getting detention.

Some other teachers give less pusishment such as Lunch Detention (sitting in a classroom eating scilently)

Yes. You know you aren't supposed to do it, and you did it anyway. You deliberately broke the rule.

Gum by itself isn't so bad, but lots of kids don't dispose of it properly, and it ends up in ugly spots on the walkways that stick to people's shoes, or in the bottom of trashcans where they have to be scraped off, or on sidewalks, or, gross, just stuck under a desk. Name one other food item that is more trouble to clean up! I can certainly understand why schools forbid it.

ASD isn't so bad. at our school, you can get a BSD (6:30 am) for something as minor as forgetting to get a paper signed.

This teacher must have had to clean that before. Gum is disgusting to clean and YOU might not spit it on the floor but others will if you let them chew in class. You were probably being made an example of. Probably could have had a less harsh punishment, but I am sure there was a good reason.

Gum is great, but there are places for it. Sadly all those places are outside of school. Good luck.

When I was a teacher the gum chewing "problem" was so rampant that we had a teacher meeting about it *sigh*

I always gave a warning first, such as "Spit it out now, but NEXT time there will be a detention."

It's the kids who stick the gum on the desks, on the floor, on the walls, etc. that go and ruin it for everyone else, but you can't just say certain kids can chew gum and others can't.

If I live to be a hundred I'll never understand what is so wrong about chewing gum in class. I used to get caught for this all the time. Just keep the gum hidden in your mouth until the teacher turns around, and then you can chew it again. Repeat until class is over. If you are caught, squish up thegum and say its a mint, orthat it is Trident gum and your dentist said to chew it.

Well, if it's against the rules, you getting detention is justifiable. You just said you knew you're not supposed to chew gum because it's against the rules. You broke a rule, now you have to serve the time for it. Sorry.

EDIT: The fact that you didn't get a warning isn't relevant. The point is, you broke a rule that you knew was in place.

I cannot tell you how many times I was written up or given detention for gum.

It is possibly the dumbest rule a school could have.

Dont worry. Once you are out in the real world you can chew all the gum you want.

I think they should have gum detectors at all schools. Gum chewing in class is out of control. When I was in school people chewing gum in class was the reason for most of my test failures. Teachers spend months in College taking recognizing a gum chewer class. When you get out of high school you will look back at the gum chewing rule and understand just how utterly stupid it was. My math teacher always said "If you chew gum in my class it better be Bubble Gum".

when I first all started practise i idea that the no gum rule become the stupidest element I had ever heard. in spite of everything, that is in basic terms gum. You chew it, you position it contained in the trash once you're performed, top? Yeah, top! no longer with on the on the spot's immature pupils (and no, i'm no longer bashing all, yet you may agree that some are). noticeably straight away I discovered why faculties have rules adversarial to gum. I easily have had a number of messes in my floor, such as one which in contact a student stretching it to each and every leg of his chair. that is been left on bookshelves, on my posters, less than the desks (which i idea by no skill got here about any more suitable), on my walls, contained in the nook of my living house windows, etc. no longer to instruct that gum wrappers are in basic terms left contained in the floor or balled up and thrown in the course of the room. you in basic terms do not comprehend that ridiculousness that comes from somewhat piece of gum. Do I punish as significantly as your instructors? No, yet I do ask my pupils to spit it out if I see them chewing it. in spite of everything, i imagine you may pass a school day with out chomping on a piece of gum.

You answered your own question. You chewed gum even though you knew you were not supposed to, you got caught. you got punished. Whether you agree with or disagree with the school rules, while you're in school and on school property you have to obey them. Grow up, mature, and learn from it.

If you knew the rules and broke them anyway, then the detention is fair. When you make a choice you choose the consequences also. Learn from this.
