What a bland, boring, toothy individual. He can't really be that sappy in person, can he?

Not at all.
In response to Skalite : Skeletor, faith is a choice and you can't sell something that.
Joel Osteen was featured as one of Barbara Walters' "10 Most Fascinating People of 2006" [4] and was named "Most Influential Christian in America" in 2006 by churchreport.com [5] He is also the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Your Best Life Now. You don't get that by bothering people.

You know what I like about him? He's not judgmental. When asked abuot whether homosexuality was right or wrong he said that he doesn't believe it's the best God has to offer us but that all people are traveling a road in imperfect knowledge and seeking better and holier lives together. The day John Hagee says anything remotely like that on TV I'll start attacking Olsteen for being too positive. Until then, I'll give him a pass.

I put him in the category with all other televangelists (Jim Bakker comes to mind) and don't much care for them or listen to them. Best case scenario, he's a well-meaning zealot who has gotten caught up in the megachurch/prosperity/power/fame ego trip, worst case scenario, he is using Christ for his own personal gain. If you recall, that's the same sort of thing that made Jesus so mad during His ministry on earth (moneychangers in the temple).
I hope to God he's sincere but I too have a suspicion that he's not. If that's the case, I sure wouldn't want to be him on Judgment Day, because he will be held accountable for anyone/everyone he has deceived in the name of the Lord.
I don't agree with some of his doctrine, and I would never choose to support or attend that church. Like you, I couldn't put my finger on it and explain to you exactly what's wrong (without analyzing his messages more closely, which I have no intention of doing) but it does seem to be more about him than about the Lord, doesn't it?
We as Christians should be able to get into the Word and study for ourselves so we can have discernment and spot error--all preachers are human and therefore fallible.

It bothers me that his preaching is more motivational speaking than bible teaching, I mean motivational speaking is all fine and good but I can get that from anyone I need to know bibically why I beleive what I beleive and where my hope comes from. But that's just me... I do listen every once in a while when I need some inspirational speech and if he's spreading the WORD that way well, Glory to God!!!

No, he's pretty duckin charismatic. Why do people always think the worst of others? Nobody's perfect. He's probably got flaws, but nothing that should bother you so much. What doesn't sit right is that it's easier for people to find fault in others so they have an excuse not to do better themselves.

In the beginning I really liked him, but the longer I watched him, the less I liked him as a preacher. He seems more like a "feel-good" motivational speaker--his message is always 'positive thinking'. He doesn't really preach the word of God--and he doesn't take a firm stand either. I don't watch him anymore. BTW-he and Victoria are going to be on Larry King (again) tonight. I will be watching that. :))

I know he means well, I dont mean to speak
against him, but.... he has been heard to say
he doesnt preach right out the bible cause he
thinks people wont understand. God will
give a person who really wants it understanding.
And I think he spends to much time writing
books. Its nice to help people but, he is promoting
his books, not the bible. Get on Good Morning
America and speak of Christ, not another book.

Yeah, he does somewhat bother me. But, at the same time, he also intrigues me. I download his podcasts because I am trying to figure out his theology. With non-denominational churches, you sometimes cannot figure out the theology just by reading a website or asking someone that attends the church. I am curious to see what they think. He seems to be one of the pastors that agrees with the prosperity gospel. But, as of now, I cannot tell.

That's what they make remotes for. Turn the channel and leave the man of God alone.
Rom:8:31: What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
Let me paraphrase. If God be for Joel Osteen it would behoove you not to be against him.
Just turn the channel if he rubs you the wrong way but keep your mouth off of a man of God.

A lot of people feel that way about him. It seems as if he is a little TOO charismatic. I personally like him. He makes me smile - and I'm an atheist. I guess he doesn't bother me because I don't buy into what he has to say. That, and he doesn't threaten fire and brimstone.
