What are the benefits (if any) of saving a picture file as a .jpg or .tif? Which is better?

I think there is a compressed TIF format also, but in practice most programs use uncompressed TIF because compressed TIF images may be bigger than the uncompressed ones, they use lossless compression (meaning no data info is discarded).

JPG compression is "lossy" which means some data info may be discarded depending on degree of compression requested.

Ditto the above, plus, if you want to display the picture on a website, the web page will obviously load a lot more slowly (groan!) and, in fact, some browsers won't even display a .tif!

.jpg travels more easily. .tif files can be huge and difficult to move.

I prefer jpg, it is more widespread.
