I don't NEED someone else's idea of MORALITY! I have my own code of ethics that I live by! I obey the laws of the land! I live by the Golden Rule! and that works very well, for me!
What I don't want or need, is a group of people, pushing THEIR morality onto me! Who I sleep with, is MY business! What I do with my BODY is MY choice!
Gay people should be able to marry who they want to marry, just like I have the choice to marry who I want to!
The problem with religionists is, that because THEY believe it, they think everyone in the world HAS to make it THEIR morality as well!
It does not work that way! They might be the majority in what they believe, i.e. in the bible, but, there are plenty of other people who think that what they think and believe, is just as good as what the christians think!, IF NOT BETTER!

I think it would take far less time to describe the best things..... because i can honestly say that i cannot think of even one "best" thing about morals as defined by religion.

It's all bad. The fact that they believe that people without god cannot be moral people..... the fact that they believe they/we need to suffer to be moral people.... it's all absurd. The fact that a person gets their morals from a 2000 year old book where the punishment for working on the sabbath is DEATH is a very scary thing. Also, what does it say about the value that the people put on the rules in this 2000 year old book when there are people working on the sabbath who are allowed to live? It's clear that their "morality" is pick & choose... like a buffet cafeteria.... or the "flavor of the week" style morality. There is no basis.. it's just "whatever this book tells me is immoral it's immoral no matter what! That is the truth and the rest are lies directly from the devil to lead us away from god!"

The morals religious espouses are often some of the worst morals imaginable. Things like declaring that if a man rapes a woman, she should be further punished by being forced to marry him. She gets to look at the face of the man who's violated her person for many years to come, who destroyed her trust in her fellow man, and who could give her a child she never wanted that she has to care for for the rest of her life, and HE gets to say a few words and do whatever the heck he wants after.

What a truly great idea. NOT.

Most religions remove truth from morality, preferring consistent adherence to a creed over honesty.

The fallout: many and in fact probably most people think that "sticking to your guns" is one of the highest signs of strength of character, and that changing your mind in response to new evidence is a sign of moral weakness.

That is, of course, exactly backwards. "Sticking to your guns" is the sure sign of utter moral cowardice, and the bravest, most moral thing a person can do is to admit that he or she was wrong about something.

If I'm allowed a second answer, I'd have to add that many religions devalue life by promising life after death. That has obviously caused/justified quite a bit of human tragedy.

Morality defined by religion separates morality from life (placing it in a deities hands), and ultimately destroys it (prescriptions can never be internal motivations).

They're put up as universal truths when they are only cultural truths at best.
They are said to emanate from Decalogue; that is a lie; there is no mention of thou shalt not molest children or rape women; most of us agree it's not a good thing but not necessarily cos it's in bible.
They are said to be set in stone but nowadays many xians eat shellfish, don't keep slaves and don't kill kids for back-chat.

Nothing! It is not religious morals that are a problem, but whether or not we live what we believe. Most people who claim to be Christians are in fact Satanist in disguise. Why? Because they believe what they are told by people in authority, and they do not search the Scriptures for themselves to find out the truth. So, they are easily led into what ever it is that there flesh wishes were true.

The worse thing is that God is a moral authority over us who sees what we do and judges us. We all hate that. It's like having to sit down with our parents and explain what we've done to them.

Religion divorces morality from suffering. Something can be "immoral" even if everyone benefits from it.

Plus there it leaves no room for discussion.

They have their "morals" but they deem it ok to go against those morals as long as it's done so in "god's" name.
