Fear: the townspeople fear for the Devil taking over their community, thus they take part in the hysteria and actively seek out people to persecute for witchcraft. Also, people like Tituba were fearful of being hanged, so they confessed to witchcraft. Superstition: the twonspeople were superstitious and believed in the Devil working through witches, though we know today that no such thing exists. Revenge: Abigail Williams started the witchcraft trials partially because she wanted to get back at Elizabeth Proctor for throwing Abigail out of the Proctors' house, and thus separating Abigail and John Proctor. Thomas Putnam was a prideful man who used the witchcraft trials as a way to take revenge against those who have wronged him, or he just doesn't like, like Francis Nurse, who owns a lot of land.
