When you are thinking about God you are meditating on him, perhaps his creation, his personality etc. But if you pray to him, whether in silence or aloud, you are actually speaking to him, telling him your worries, anxieties, problems and thanking him for things, maybe even mentioning other people and their problems.
Jesus taught his followers to pray this way, Matt. 6 v 9 - 13. Our Father in Heaven, let your name be sanctified (using God's name Jehovah) . Let your Kingdom come, let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven (for God's government to take over rulership of the earth).

What sort of a question is this John Hall? Quite complicated so I do not know where to answer but I assume you mean an answer from God directly is the right thing. It seems you are very experienced with that. Let me tell you that a few living people met God. When they saw God, the bible tells, they saw God from behind. They saw His back. Some-one standing there but not facing them. Why did God do so bad? It is because you see the help you have gotten when things are over. Then you feel right about how He has contributed. Your holy spirit is the right way of thinking, brought by the teachings of Jesus. The fire He baptizes us with is purifying our thoughts. This fails on you like when you say today I'll not be stupid and make clever decisions. Many people do believe they can actually command their brain. Wish you good luck with your exams. I did never feel anything but after reading I know a whole lot about it, even that the father of the guy was Mormon. That Jesus was not Jesus at all because he said to protect children was quite easy. I bet your mind says where to buy things cheap and how difficult your exams will be so you may hang out or not. When God would tell us these things, live would not be much of a choice. A friend told me his headache was suddenly over when he asked God for guidance on a church. What a clear sign. I do not think we are invited like that and God is not a signpost. All these instances you mention are self inflicted or you do not see the people again who disagree. Tell your mother it is going to rain and your father the sun will shine. I bet that will make you a good weather prophet. Some people fall for these psychological tricks from churches that have the Holy Spirit as their guest. I can only say one day they know better.

Usually, praying involves asking God for some favour, but you do not ask for anything when thinking about God.

Whats the difference between thinking about a loved one and talking to them or writing them a letter? One is communication that builds the relationship and the other is just a thought. Sometimes thoughts are not all that matters.
Would you rather your husband/bf/whatever think about you every day for a week while they were gone or call/email you every day? Likewise, God would rather you talk to him than just think about him.

If you think about a friend of yours, it doesn't mean that you are talking to that friend. Praying is having a conversation. with God. It is sitting and talking to him as well as taking time to listen to him. Thinking about him isn't talking to him. Just like I noted before, if you are thinking about your best friend, that doesn't mean you are talking to your friend. Praying is so important. It helps you grow closer to God.

The same as the difference between thinking about Angelina Jolie and planning out what you would like to say to her.

A conversation is communication, thought, al;though obviously well intended might not net the same results. Ask & you will receive.
