Arthurian legend is the fictional origin of England. The Knights Templar lost the Holy Land to Saladin
of Egypt in a series of battles, and were burned on crosses by the pope. A contemporary equivalent of the
Knights Templar is the Haliburton corporation. A contemporary equivalent of the Knights of Malta,
(Knights Hospitaller), is the Blackwater security agency.

Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church in 1129, the Order became a favored charity across Europe and grew rapidly in membership and power. Templar knights in their distinctive white mantles with red cross were among the best fighting units of the Crusades.
According to Christian mythology, the Holy Grail was the dish, plate, or cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper, said to possess miraculous powers.

They were knights who protected pilgrims on their journey to Jerusalem, but many of them became greedy and warmongering. Documents recently released by the Catholic Church says they were very sinful and listed some of their sins, but they were not "heretics" in the strictest sense. A heretic is one who holds religious beliefs contrary to the Catholic Church, but the Knights Templar did not really do this, instead they were just sinful and instigating war.
They searched for the Holy Grail, but from 33AD to really 1200 the Holy Grail was really nothing in Christian teachings, but then toward the medieval era stories and legends began to emerge. Things like the Holy Grail catching the blood of Christ is totally made up since there are no references to it in scripture or any of the early Christian teachers. Its just a treasure hunt.

Like the Druids, this is one of those groups where the bottom line is we don't have too much solid evidence about them, and people have made up stuff to suit their own conspiracy theories. But here's one place to start:
