traveling by rail is much safer than by automobile for passenger mile
It uses far far less fuel to travel by rail than personal vehicle, gets autos off the road.
When a peice of highway gets worn out, it takes millions of taxpayer dollars and months and thousand upon thousand of gallons of fuel and huge machinery to rebuild.
A worn out peice of railroad track can be rebuilt between trains, using private money, and hardly any fuel and only a handful of relatively small machines. much much more environmenatlly freindly and almost everyting taken from the track can be recycled.
And the answer about Europe vs U.S. is mostly right, it takes funding wiht public money to make a passenger system work and in this country we have elected officials that cant see past their next election so our passenger rail system is only a fraction of what it could and should be.

Quieter, more convenient, and more comfortable than flying

High-speed rail can be MUCH faster (because of less time travelling to the airport, less time going through security, no time sitting on a taxiway, less time loading luggage...basically you can show up later, and get underway sooner) than a short flight. (Of course, a trans-continental flight would beat high-speed-rail even if there were a HSR system that went that far)

The scenery is better.

You are free to fall asleep, which you can't do while driving.

Usually cheaper than flying. It isn't cheaper than driving, typically, unless you don't already own a car.

Safer than driving. (Not sure whether it's safer than flying. I believe high-speed rail is, but those usually have protected corridors through urban areas)
