Hi! I am getting married next year outdoors, in a garden that overlooks the ocean/bay. Since the chairs will be facing the bay I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a way we could create a focal point to the spot we'll be standing in. I know typically people use an arch but I'd like to avoid doing this and try something new. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I am also having an outdoor wedding & we will have a gazebo decorated instead of an arch. It is similar to an arch but more of a focal point. Also, you will be on a slight platform so everyone can see easier. We will stand at the entranceway facing our friends & family with our officiant just outside the entrance of the gazebo, facing us. Then we are setting up the chairs in more of a half-moon shape around the gazebo instead of two long aisles straight back. I think it will be beautiful & feel more intimate than a typical setup. Good luck & congratualtions, I'm sure you will have a beautiful wedding!

Some examples to look at: http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=wedding+gazebo+&ei=UTF-8&js=1&ni=20&fr=ush-ans&b=41
**By the way, if you don't have access to a gazebo that you can borrow, many places rent them out for a day.

Put an urn full of flowers or branches on either side of the altar area. Or use old-fashioned crates, and rest vases of flowers on top of them.

Mount some shepherd's hooks in the sand and hang floral pomanders from them. Or small buckets of flowers, or lanterns.

Line the aisle area with petals.

Arrange the chairs in a semi-circle around you, so that the vows area is more of a focal point.

Are there any trees nearby? I got married next to a river and there was one big tree nearby. We actually had the top of the "aisle" be under the tree and had our florist hang sheer ribbons from the branches. This created a very pretty, breezy look without the need for an arch. Our ceremony was beautiful and we saved a lot of money!

You could do two small fences on either side of where you'll be standing. I'm picturing small white fences, 3 feet high and 8 feet long each, decorated with flowers and ivy, etc. It would provide a stage, so to speak, without the typical arch and without blocking the ocean view.

How about fancy room screens partitions/dividers? Something like this: http://orientalfurnishings.com/OrientalFurnitureProd.aspx?productID=622&ModelNumber=M-71-3-B/W

If you bought 2 and put them at angles for your wedding party to stand in front of it will put the focus on the space between the two - - where you & yourhubby will be.

I've seen pics on all kinds of websites with a large (like 2 or 3 feet) vase with lots of flowers that go up maybe another couple feet on each side of the minister/priest/reverend/rabbi/whatever.

As a wedding planner- How about miniture trees, or potted plants? to add decoration to them add on ribbons of the color theme of the wedding and if the wedding is at night or close to dusk how about lit torches (spaced far enough to where no one catches on fire)? use the typical isle runner, or how about rose petals in place of the isle runner, or on top of the isle runner?

any trees you can stand between? Or maybe just some pillars with flower arrangements on them. maybe a canopy frame covered in tulle fabric flowing in the breeze that you can stand under. maybe just make a circle or heart of flower petals you both can stand in with a trail of petals going down the isle.....
