Because we consider the nude form "obscene". We have no problem letting our children watch violent sports, movies, play violent video games etc...but viewing a naked woman's breast will "traumatize" them. I don't get it, either!

I think it is most of North America. Very few people are comfortable with the shape they have their bodies in. Everywhere we look we are being told how we should or should not look. I do know quite a few people, who have no problem going neck-ed, in the privacy of their homes. To each their own I guess.

That is quite an interesting question. In fact Americans have a lot in common with fundamentalist Muslims in that respect. Utter mindless violence is fine but a topless woman oh no hide that.
I just wonder.

Wow...alot of "what's wrong with you dumb American's" questions out here today.
Here's an answer from a God fearing, intelligent, sophisticated and liberal American (we're not all obese, uptight and stupid...though people love to make us out that way). I think Americans are less comfortable with their nakedness (and their sexuality) because our country was built on strict Puritanical and Victorian principles. It's been engrained in our society and its a hard thing for people to let go of. You are taught to cover up, hide "dirty" things like your privates or your under things and for pete's sake don't be comfortable with your sexuality! That's a lot to get over when sex and nakedness are linked with shame. But things are changing and society is learning to be more accepting of more "European" ideals.
Keep in mind people that as countries go we are just in infancey. The US (as we know it) hasn't been around all that long. Other countries have had CENTURIES to evolve into their levels of sophistication. We're still learning who we are and what we are capable of. We might not be topless at the beach yet but were running around our backyards butt naked!
I'm teaching my children to love their bodies and be comfortable with what god has blessed them with. If that helps raise future generations of Americans capable of being free with their bodies then I've done my job.
God bless America!

Because Americans are uptight. No really because we just don't appreciate our bodies like the French seriously in America it is in to be Anorexic. How many Anorexic looking chics do you see at the beach possibly 2-3.

It comes from our Puritanical roots and 'The Church", which was the source of law in the beginning.
As a society, we have been told, for centuries, how to behave, what to think, feel and do, so as to be 'moral' and 'right'.
Difference is not tolerated, but rather, condemned.
I mean, look at how a nursing mother is harassed! It's ridiculous!

We once had two American 20 somethings staying with us - both girls - they freaked out completely when I hung our family's laundry up on the drying rack. They thought it was obscene and immoral and claimed they were living in a house of Satan. When I asked them did they ever wear bikinins on the beach they said, yeah of course. But they didn't want anyone to see their clean underwear drying! Talk about double standards. Mind you, they were from Texas and they were incredibly, incredibly, thick.

Because we've created a society where physical appearance is put above all else. Basically, we've built our own prison inside designer clothes.
Sad bunch we are !
