It depends on whether or not we tangle with Iran and Pakistan.

Better than you might think. When you join the Navy or Air Force Reserve as a traditional Reservist ("weekend warrior") you're assigned to a unit. If your unit gets called up, you go. Can't speak for the Navy right now, but the Air Force has developed a rotation schedule for stateside Reserve units. Granted, not every Air Force Reserve unit is in the rotation, and they won't always call the whole unit up to deploy, but most of the Reserve units are in the rotation and most units that do deploy send EVERYONE. So don't listen to any recruiter who tries to tell you that you're in no danger of being deployed overseas. Once you sign the contract and take the oath, the Armed Forces owns you and can call you up anytime to go anywhere.

I am a Canadian, married to an American.

Like Viet Nam, Canada did NOT go to Iraq with our USA allies. I think our doubts were reasonable!

Since my wife's relatives are all in the states, we have relatives "in harm's way", fighting in Iraq.

Canada is planning to pull out of Afganistan, according to the news lately; but I'm still nervous that my son applied to join our army reserves.

I begged Gregory to join the Coast Guard instead, to stay in Canadian waters, safe from road bombs and snippers overseas, but he says he can't do it part time.

Does the US Coast Guard have a "reserves"programme? It sounds about the safest branch of the mililtary to me.

U.S. Air Force Reserves and Navy Reserves are going to Iraq. Book it Danno!

U.S. Air Force Reserves have very good reason for being nervous about being deployed overseas.

Pilots get shot down.

Navy Reserves being deployed should not scare you, unless they are pilots.

The terrorists are running out of row boats!!!

Navy Reserves from my husband's unit are sent to Iraq, Qatar and Afghanistan everyday. If you join any branch of the military, reserve or not, you can get deployed at the discretion and needs of the military. If you want to join for tuition assistance and the GI Bill, but you don't ever want to go anywhere, please don't join.

as a SeaBee or MA in the Navy, about 100%. as an HM, about 75%..the other 25% being GITMO.

Both the AF and Navy Reserves are sending INDIVIDUAL people over, not just units as well
