i was playing tug of war with him and he jumped up to grab the rope and landed on his butt, now his tail doesnt go up , when i try to lift his tail up he cries. is it just sore. or can dogs break their tail bone? if there is such a thing?

Yes they can break tails and it is very painful, it is one of the reason some breeds are docked. He needs to see a vet. They can not set it like a broken leg but they can give pain meds and an anti-inflamatory to reduce swelling. If it is severe the vet may recomend removal, normally they can and will heal but will have a crooked spot there.
The vet can confirm that it is the tail and not the hip joint or a chipped or broken bone, their are other things can break/be injured in that area.

I used to work at a vet clinic, and one of our regulars brought in their dog after it's tail was caught in the garage door. It was broken at the base of the tail. Unfortunately there was nothing they could do. You can't put a cast on it! But it did heal in time. The dog's tail never curled the same, but he was fine and was back to wagging in no time.

Take your dog to the vet and stop touching it. Yes they can break their tails

Take him to the vet who knows him, the one who gave him all his shots. They will tell you what to do.
