I have a half grown kitten and I've had him for 2 weeks. A few days ago I noticed when he uses the litter pan now he doesn't cover up his poop. Instead he scratches on the side of walls of the litter pan. The problem with him doing this is the poop is just sitting there on top and the litter isn't absorbing the odor. Can anyone tell me why he would suddenly stop covering it up?

I clean the litter pan every single day, sometimes twice!

I've been using this same litter since I got him and he never had a problem with it before a few days ago. Up until then has covering it up properly.

OMG my cat still does that!! i did everything for her put 3 litter boxes, changed the litter frequently, every thing! lil brat and nothing i just started to cover that crap myself ha ha ha.... maybe you should try putting more or less litter, i put less litter and she started to cover it up with what she had but then i felt bad for my other cats not having enough litter that they were comfortable with too..... so i just left it at that good luck!

My oldest cat started doing that when I brought the 3rd into the house. The vet told me it was because he was showing he is the king & wanted his smell to dominate the others. If you don't have any other cats maybe he is seeing one outside and feels he has to show who's boss. I did the same with keeping the litter pan clean, extra litter pans, etc. He still does it. I just either keep the scooper near by & clean it out right away or cover it up. It's all you can do.

My older cat did this until I finally made him an indoor/outdoor cat. I think they are just trying to get the litter off of their paws and "think" that they are covering up the poop just by scratching on the wall or bag in the pan. It's instinctive for cats to bury, but the cat is still going through the motions of that process...it's just not actually doing the deed. Anyway, I don't think this is really something you can fix besides rubbing his nose in it or something like that, but you shouldn't punish the cat either for this because he's really not doing anything wrong. Good luck!

I don't know the answer to this but I have a cat that never covers his and I have to scoop it out as soon as I know about it or it stinks up the whole house. It sounds like he is trying to cover it by scratching the side of the box, but not getting any litter on it. I don't know a good solution to this. Good luck though.

Oh some cats are lazy. You can try the automatic type that scoops it out into a resovoir. She is scratching the side to get the litter out of her paws. The cat may not like the litter you have chosen. Try some other brands that wont clog kitties paws.

Are you keeping the litter clean. I wouldn't want to use my hands to cover it up if I might scrap into some other stuff!!

You cat may not like the type of litter you are using, Try some different brands.

Past that ....no one can figure out why a cat does things. They have their own agenda.

my cat does that too, he'll scratch & scratch at the sides of the box, the wall, everywhere but actually IN the litter. and he looks at his mess in bewilderment that it isn't covered up, and scratch & scratch some more. he does that for a good 15 min. before he'll give up. i don't know WHY he does that, but i can always tell it's him in there from all the scratching & i go in & toss some litter over it with the scoop. he always looks at me like he's grateful when i do that, and runs off to play! he's not the smartest one of the bunch, poor little guy :)

Try changing the litter (kittens need clay litter) some litter hurts their feet.

Also, make sure you are adding enough litter about 4"

Just a suggestion.

Maybe he thinks he is when he is scratching.. We adopted a cat(rip lucky) That had lost his front right arn in an accident. He usually covered his poop, but I noticed several times that he didnt, and I would get onto him, until I saw him in the bathroom one time, going thru the motions with his stub., as if he was covering his mess up....Its was so sad, like he thought he could still use the arm that was gone..
