Is it to make people stomp the floor as if they are having leg cramps, is it to make them look as if they are having epileptic seizures, or to speak in tongues? Or is it to guide one to the truth?

Because we have a choice in the matter, when he is given reign to do so...

He gives us wisdom to say what we ought.
Mark 13:11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

He reveals truth.
John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

He gives us a spiritual power.
Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

He allowed the apostles to speak in languages that were foreign to them.
Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

He enables prophecy to be spoken.

He dwells in believers.

He acts as the mark of the believer and guarantees that we go to heaven.
Ephesians 1:13-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.

He reveals spiritual mysteries.
Ephesians 3:5 which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets.

He acts as a translator of our prayers and sometimes prays for us when we dont know what to pray.
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Im sure that there are other things that the Holy Spirit does. What you are describing is what some denominations call "being slain in the Spirit." I have never witnessed nor experienced it so I will not comment on it.

You know, I try very hard not to judge how other people worship, but I just don't see the holy spirit leading Christians to roll and flop around on the floor. The very first time I ever attended a church like this, a small boy was convulsing in front of the altar, and while everyone else was reveling in the sight, I was fully prepared to call 911. I would have, too, if my husband hadn't stopped me. I don't know if the boy was acting to gain approval from the adults, but part of me was very afraid that this boy could possibly have an actual seizure disorder and no one would recognize it.

I think that the holy spirit is here to guide us in the right direction, help us discern the truth, and give us that gentle nudging when we mess up from time to time. I don't think its about putting on a show and drawing attention to ourselves.

Last I knew, He was to guide us, lead us to truth, point us to Jesus, be our Healer, Comforter, etc.
However, you'll also see that when the Holy Spirit came upon people that they began to speak in tongues and prophecy. You'll also see that the Holy Spirit gives different gifts to different people in order to build up the church (1 Cor 12).
The Holy Spirit doesn't MAKE people do weird things like roll on the ground, shout out, shake, etc. That is simply a human reaction to the Holy Spirit coming on you.
For example, if I were to spit on you, you would react differently than someone else if I spit on them. You may get upset, while others cry, and others ignore it.
The church would be perfect if not for the fact that there are people involved.

I'll go with to guide one to the truth. In churches, especially Holiness or Pentacostal, I've seen many getting caught with the Holy Spirit, and rejoicing in special ways. The ultimate purpose of The Holy Spirit is to lead us to understanding, and complete the Holy Trinity (God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and The Holy Spirit).

To guide one to the truth. That whole stomping on the floor things is all false. They didnt do that in the bible. And speaking in tongues means to speak another language not known to you. Like if a German person SUDDENLY speaks French but has never heard it in their life. That is speaking in new tongues! Not that jibber jabber people speak today.

To teach, convict of sins and comfort, the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, is a prayer language and gives you boldness to witness.

Guidance.
"A life guided by the holy Spirit is like a flying bird.
We can live our life in two ways. Birds can walk and birds can fly. By walking a bird can cover a distance. But by flying it can cross mountains and rivers and other hindrances. A life that is guided by the Spirit is like a bird flying. "
