Many of the answers given thus far are good for the novice. Here are my suggestions to teach one that knows nothing about a guitar:
1. The names of the strings.
2. How to hold the guitar while playing.
3. Tuning methods.
4. Explain that the student must endure through sore fingertips and then gain the needed calluses before he can learn much more.
5. The G chord.
6. Care and maintenance of the guitar.

The first lesson should be all about the basics that your student will need to progress. Essentially, the parts of the guitar, frets, what the dots on the frets mean, saddle, why the guitar works the way it does etc. Also reading music, there is only so far one can progress with tabbing or ear playing. Teach your student how to tune a guitar using a tuner, and how to tune it to itself. Teach the proper way to hold it, and have your hands on it. Teach basic finger excercies to learn to limber up the hand. THAT SHOULD BE IT! Don't play any songs yet, because if your student doesn't know the basics, they will pick up bad habits that will be really difficult to break!
Good luck!:)

Teach them how to play "A Horse With No Name". It's the easiest song ever to play.
Open E minor
to an open chord, 1 string/second fret, and 4th string/second fret (a kind of F# minor).
It's really fun to play and a confidence booster when they can play a song after one lesson.

How to hold the guitar. how to hold a pic. and learn him the first 3 notes on the small E string. and make him practice. that should be perfect for a begginer. Oh.. and ask him.. what are his expectations for the cours.. if he has any special things he would like to learn.

Teach them how to put their fingers on the strings. Strumming is also a hard thing for a beginner to catch on to. Once you've played for a while you forget how hard it was at first.

How to hold the strings down. You can't do anything until you can hold those damn strings down.
Then, show them chords, and how to practice going from one chord to another. Then maybe strumming? That's the hard part...
It gets boring to hear the same chord being played a million times, so be prepared!!

well reading music would be a really good start... start by showing them the right way to hold it, the string names, what the frets are for and just get them comfortable with the instrument in general before you start clouding the brain... get them used to strumming with a pic all the basics
