I thought the same thing when I did mine at first. But then several people pointed out the reality of it. People will look at it, mark their calendars, send the RSVP, then toss it. Have you kept any invites you received? How many do you even remember? Honestly, I never kept any I got, nor do I even remember any beyond the one my cousin sent. I only remember hers because it was just this past July, and her wedding was right before mine, so I kinda silently compared hers to mine.
They are fine. No one will care if they are simple. As long as it isn't merely chicken scratch on a random piece of paper, you are fine.
And don't worry about that "inner" enveope nonsense. It's just more junk for the waste basket. I think the wedding invitation industry created them so you will spend more money.

I agree that the invitations are usually thrown away afterwards and that money can be used for other things in the wedding, but if you'd really like to add something I would go with either the ribbon idea, or you can get some colored paper to match with the colors of the wedding, cut it out so it'll fit into the envelope and almost cover the flap (with about a centimeter outline left) and get a gluestick and slide it into the envelope. That way, even though you don't have an inner envelope you have it lined, and you're incorporating color (you can also use a nice patterned paper with similar colors. Scrapbook paper or even nice wrapping paper is a good source). Good luck!

Go to a craft store and get some ribbon and little decorations for the invitation.
We did our invitations ourselves. Got a pack of 50 from a craft store, bought some royal blue ribbon, silver ribbon, and the double heart (silver). We used the ribbons to go around the invitation and with the thin silver ribbon we tied the double heart decorations to it.
There have been a LOT of compliments about our invitations.
Its not tacky. AND, you do NOT need an inner envelope. We never used one.

Sounds fine to me. All that other stuff is a waste of paper, in my opinion. We ordered a nice invitation kit online that has similar pieces to the one you described: single-sheet invitation, RSVP card/envelope, and outer envelope. I've seen lots of these lately, and they're typically very nice.

If you'd like to, get some organza ribbon to tie a small bow at the top. I'd keep it very simple though--you wind up embellishing too much here, and it will start looking tacky very quickly.
Most people will throw the invite away anyway. I keep it until the wedding, then in the trash it goes.

It sounds very nice. All I had in mine was an invitation, a little business card template I altered to work as a reminder to RSVP and a reminder of the wedding date and for my friends I added a not about specific behavior while at the event, being as our reception will be in the parents backyard and they dislike cussing and drinking.
I was complimented regarding my invitations by a couple of my friends.

I went on the net. Found samples of what i liked.. copied and pasted.. messed with the type of script a bit.. Then i went to kinkos and got matching envelopes and paper for $15.00. I printed them up on my computer at home. Simple, RSVP at the end..and it was quite pretty. Cheap price doesn't mean that it's cheap looking.

It's reducing waste. No one ever needs all those inserts and extra envelopes. We just had the invitation and instead of reply cards, we had our guests respond via email or phone. For the rehearsal dinner, we enclosed a small square of nice paper with all the details. Everyone complemented us on our invites.

It just reduces waste and crap that people will inevitably throw away anyway. Why even bother with paper? Use email. It's free and you can make it as fancy as you want. Save some trees.

Hi. They sounds beautiful! I have encouraged brides to buy these kits and I know the exact one from Target that you are talking about. Simple is nice. Why spend oodles of money on something everyone WILL throw away!
They sounds nice....don't worry about it.
I hope you have a beautiful wedding!
